From Steel Magnolias to The Wedding Singer to Bridesmaids, movies that focus on a wedding or have a wedding that plays a large role in the plot have been around for generations. But which wedding movies are the most popular today? And what’s each state’s favorite wedding movie? In this campaign, we used Google Trends data to see which wedding movies are the most searched-for in every U.S. state.
Methodology
We created a keyword list of 24 popular wedding movies and referenced Google Trends search data from the last five years to determine which one was looked up the most in each state and overall.
The Most Popular Wedding Movie in Every U.S. State
Early 2000s rom-com classics like Mamma Mia, 27 Dresses, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding are everywhere to be found here, but there are also some titles from different genres, like Utah’s most searched-for flick, The Princess Bride.
This might not come as a surprise, but Sweet Home Alabama was the most searched-for wedding movie in Alabama, and Steel Magnolias was the most searched-for wedding movie in Louisiana (the state where the film is set).
The Most Popular Wedding Movie in Every U.S. Region
Sweet Home Alabama was popular in the South, but not as popular as another southern classic, Steel Magnolias. Meanwhile, the Northeast couldn’t get enough of Greece, as Mamma Mia and My Big Fat Greek Wedding were each the most searched-for wedding movie in three northeastern states.
Not only did Corpse Bride win the West, it was only the most searched-for wedding movie in western states… if we count Texas as southwestern. And the Midwest loved their Kristen Wiig, as Bridesmaids was the most searched-for wedding movie in Illinois, Minnesota, and Ohio.
The Most Popular Wedding Movie Overall
With eight total states that looked it up more than any other film on our list, Mamma Mia is the most popular wedding movie across state lines. But it wasn’t a runaway victory. Both Steel Magnolias and My Big Fat Greek Wedding were a close second as they were each the most searched-for wedding movie in six states, and Corpse Bride was just behind them with five state wins.
While there were quite a few movies that only won the title of “most searched-for” in one state, there were also quite a few that didn’t even accomplish that. These include Wedding Crashers, Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Wedding Planner, The Wedding Date, Bride Wars, and License to Wed. There’s always next time, though, right?
