Congratulations, April babies: You have the one-of-a-kind diamond as your birthstone! As the most talked-about and popular gem, diamonds have a rich history that highlights their rarity, beauty and unbeatable sparkle.

Loose diamonds.

How are diamonds made?

You’ve probably heard somewhere that diamonds are made of carbon, the same life-giving element that can be found in the tip of your pencil, that lump of coal in the fireplace, and even in you — 18.5% of you, in fact. But what causes this common element to transform into the stunning stone that takes center stage in most engagement rings?

It all starts with carbon-bearing materials deep underneath the Earth. There are only two places where these gems are able to form: the lithospheric mantle, found below stable continental plates, and the site of a previous meteorite strike. Here, the carbon is exposed to high pressure while maintaining relatively low temperatures, where it begins its process of transforming into a raw diamond. Diamond-bearing rock is then carried from the mantle to the earth’s surface by deep-origin volcanic eruptions. The magma from these eruptions comes from the same layer of the earth where diamonds are formed, so the rock is able to travel through volcanic pipes, spreading it all over the world. That’s why we find deposits in South Africa, India, Brazil and even some areas of the U.S. Because of the long and arduous process that they go through, diamonds are the strongest gem we know of. They get their name from the Greek word “adamas,” which translates to “unconquerable,” a reference to the stone’s unparalleled hardness.

Did you know?

If you’ve ever stared at a diamond and thought it looked other-worldly, you might not be too far off — many of the ones on our planet today actually originated in space. There’s even a specific type called “carbonado,” found in South America and Africa, thought to be deposited via an ancient asteroid impact about 3 billion years ago. While some of these stones came to us embedded in meteorites, diamonds are also formed in the craters created when an asteroid impacts the earth.

The history of diamonds

Some historians estimate that the first diamond trading began as early as 4 B.C. Because they were one of the only materials that could be used to engrave metal, they were prized for this strength and their ability to reflect light. Some ancient civilizations even believed that the stones were lightning made real on Earth, and many believed that the stone had great healing powers. These powers included the ability to heal brain disease, alleviate pituitary gland disorders, draw toxins from the blood and more.

Diamonds were first popularized in India, when the Moghuls and Imperial Colony mined them from deposits along three major rivers. By the 1400s, the gem was becoming fashionable among Europe’s elite, particularly because they were so rare at the time. In the early 1700s, India’s diamond mines were being depleted and Brazil emerged as a new and important source. Diamonds were discovered in the pans of gold miners sifting through local rivers, and Brazil dominated the market for over 150 years afterward.

The late 1800s marked a shift in the industry because of two major events. The first was that South African deposits were discovered and began to be mined, and the second was the establishment of De Beers, an international corporation specializing in diamond exploration and mining, in 1888. By 1900, De Beers controlled an estimated 90% of the world’s production of rough diamonds.

New mines continued to be discovered throughout the late 1900s and early 2000s, including mines in Australia, Canada and the former Soviet Union. De Beers began to greatly reduce its role as the custodian of supply, with diamonds flowing through multiple channels, rather than a single-channel path from the well-known supplier.

Today, our diamond deposits are being slowly depleted. The finite nature of this gem is one of the reasons why they are so highly prized as the rare and beautiful stone they are. In fact, less than 20% of diamonds pulled from the earth today are considered gem quality, and even fewer are considered “investment diamonds” (a.k.a. the ones you’ll find in most engagement rings). You need 250 tons of ore to produce a 1.00-carat, gem-quality stone. Diamonds that don’t qualify as gem quality are used in industrial applications.

Did you know?

In 2007, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics announced the discovery of a 10 billion-trillion-trillion-carat diamond in the sky, which they named “Lucy” after the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” This white dwarf star is essentially a giant chunk of crystallized carbon that weighs a whopping 5 million-trillion-trillion pounds. However, this enormous rock is located 50 light years from Earth, so don’t get your hopes up about claiming it as your own just yet.

Famous diamonds

The Blue Hope: Sometimes referred to as the Hope Diamond, this gem is known less for its appearance than its turbulent history and legendary “curse.” It was named after its purchaser, Henry Thomas Hope, and was part of a larger stone brought to Europe from India in the 1600s. It was stolen during the French Revolution and sold to Hope in 1830, but after inheriting the gem, Hope’s son lost his entire family fortune, giving it a reputation for carrying bad luck to its owners. This reputation stuck when Mrs. Edward McLean acquired the stone and subsequently lost her fortune, experienced her only child dying from an accident, then took her own life in the mid-1900s. The Hope Diamond was purchased by Harry Winston in 1949 but was eventually put on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, to save any future owners from the bad luck it was believed to carry.

The Great Star of Africa: This stone is the largest cut diamond in the world, weighing in at 530.20 carats. The Great Star of Africa is a pear cut with 74 facets and is currently set in the royal scepter, held with the other Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. It was cut from a 3106-carat gem called the Cullinan, which is the largest diamond ever found to date. Discovered at a mine in Transvaal, South Africa, the Cullinan was cut into nine major diamonds and 96 smaller diamonds, though it’s believed that it may have only been half of a much larger stone.

The Orloff: Another famous diamond is the Orloff, which is believed to have been once used as the eye of a Hindu god at a temple in India. In the 1700s, it was stolen by a French deserter who sold it to an English captain for only 2,000 pounds. When it arrived in Amsterdam, Russian count Grigori Orloff purchased it for 90,000 pounds, hoping to bring it back to Russia to impress his lover, Catherine the Great. Legend has it that the stone was hidden in a priest’s tomb when Napoleon’s army advanced on Moscow in 1812. The stone now sits in the Diamond Treasury of Russia in Moscow.

Text: There are an endless number of interesting facts about the beautiful April birthstone. If you’re curious, here are a few more things you probably didn’t know about diamonds:

 1. Around 1.5 million diamond nanoparticles can be found in a candle’s flame, which may be why its light is often compared to the sparkle of this rare gem. We knew there was a reason why candlelit dinners are so romantic!
 2. The first diamond in South Africa, called the Eureka, was discovered by a 15-year-old boy named Erasmus Stephanus. At first glance, he thought the 21.24-carat raw stone was nothing but a simple pebble.
 3. Not all diamonds are colorless. Natural colored diamonds are extremely rare but can be found in shades of red, blue, pink, yellow, brown, black and even green.
 4. A diamond loses up to 50% of its weight during the cutting and polishing operation. This process is essential to producing the incredible sparkle and unique shapes we find in popular diamond cuts.
 5. Despite being mined all around the world, almost 80% of diamonds are sold in New York City.

It’s true what they say — diamonds are forever. They’re one of the hardest substances on Earth, ranking a 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. They also symbolize our unbreakable bond of love and commitment, sentiments that we hope to share forever with our better half. And yet, you might find that the inevitable passage of time erodes the once pristine brilliance of your diamond.

Don’t worry, this is completely normal and doesn’t foreshadow any trouble in the department of love. Instead, it simply means your diamond needs a good cleaning to restore its blinding fire.

Why Should You Clean Your Diamond?

Although diamonds themselves are nearly indestructible, their brilliant shine is more fragile. But to understand why you should clean your diamond, you first should understand why they shine so brightly.

Diamonds get their fire from phenomena of light — reflection and refraction. At any given moment, light is cast down on your diamond. Some of that light immediately bounces back off of its surface, which is called reflection. The rest travels through the diamond, bouncing — or refracting — off of its carefully crafted facets and back through the top toward your eye. This creates the fiery shimmer diamonds are known for.

Over time, oil from your fingers transfers to the gemstone’s surface and creates the perfect environment for dust and dirt to collect. This makes the surface more opaque or cloudy, blocking out precious light and reducing its refraction. The result is a duller appearance. But how often do you need to restore your diamond’s natural shine?

How Often Should You Clean Your Diamond?

A diamond should be cleaned regularly to maintain brilliance and fire. In fact, we recommend various levels of cleaning at various intervals to keep diamonds looking at their best. For best results, clean your diamonds at the following intervals:

Daily. For daily touch-ups, it’s perfectly safe to wipe down your diamonds with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. Just don’t rub too hard or use anything that could scratch metal or leave unwanted fibers stuck underneath prongs or fittings.

Semi-monthly. As dirt and debris collect on your diamond over the course of weeks and months, give the stone a more thorough cleaning. Aim to accomplish this every two months. There are a variety of DIY ways to safely clean your diamond and some that can cause harm. We will cover all of this and more later in this guide.

Semi-annually. Every six months, we recommend having your diamond cleaned professionally for optimal head-turning brilliance. At Shane Co., we offer free cleanings in-store to make it easier for our customers to show off their rocks year-round. Along with restoring that pristine shine, a knowledgeable gemologist will check for loose stones and bent prongs and ensure your piece leaves our store in great condition.

Diamond-Cleaning Mistakes to Avoid

Diamond cleaning mistakes to avoid.

Don’t scrub your diamond with the nearest chemicals and abrasives. Yes, it’s easy to assume that due to its stalwart composition, a diamond can handle the harshest suds in your cleaning closet. However, this could not be further from the truth.

1. Don’t use bleach, chlorine, or acetone. It is imperative that you keep your diamond jewelry far away from this harmful chemical trio, according to the Gemological Institute of America. While the stones themselves might survive unscathed, these harsh chemicals can erode precious metals, worsening the overall look of the piece or allowing the diamond to fall out of its setting, never to be found again.

2. Don’t use manual abrasives. The main problem with using abrasive materials to clean your diamond, again, is the damage they can cause to any metal rings or fittings. As brides.com reported after interviewing Mark Mann, director of Global Jewelry Manufacturing Arts at GIA, abrasive products like toothpaste, baking soda, or powdered cleaners will easily scratch gold and other precious metals.
3. Don’t work next to a sink or drain. No, seriously. Just don’t do it. It’s no use playing the hero and thinking that you definitely won’t be that person who drops their diamond down the drain. And yet, it’s happened to the best of us and simply is not worth the risk. A large serving bowl filled with water is a much more suitable environment for your diamond-cleaning needs.

How to Clean Your Diamond Properly

The best way to clean your diamonds.

Now that you know what not to do, let’s cover the best ways to clean your diamond at home. There are several popular schools of thought as to the best process and we will go over the pros and cons of each.

1. Use a gentle degreaser. The best way to clean your diamond at home is to bathe it in a gentle degreasing solution such as warm water and regular dish soap. Allow the diamond to sit in this bath for 20 to 40 minutes to loosen dirt particles and finger oil. Then retrieve the piece of jewelry and wipe it down with a lint-free dishcloth or microfiber towel.

If stuck-on dirt remains, particularly in the grooves where diamond and prong meet, you might need to employ a toothbrush with very soft bristles and gently brush the problem areas. Be especially careful when brushing antique jewelry or a tension setting where the diamond is being held in place by pressure alone.

Then, rinse off the diamond again (not near the sink!), assess your progress, and if satisfactory, pat dry once more with the lint-free towel of your choice. Diamond jewelry should not be allowed to air dry in order to avoid water stains.

2. Use a formulated cleaning solution. Store-bought solutions are another incredibly cheap option, but slightly riskier. Unlike over-the-counter household cleaners, these are specially designed to be safe on jewelry. However, you need to read the label to ensure you have the right product for the job.

For instance, some solutions are formulated for specific jobs or metals, such as Connoisseurs Silver Jewelry Cleaner, which targets tarnish on silver. For diamonds, you’d want to go for their Fine Jewelry Cleaner instead. Choosing the wrong cleaner still could lead to damage if you’re not careful.

3. Use a steam cleaner. Steam cleaning is an effective albeit pricier process for restoring shine to your diamonds. This method uses pressurized steam to rid jewelry of grease and grime without resorting to harmful chemicals. It’s safe for precious metals as well as diamonds and other gemstones. Plus, they have the added benefit of killing bacteria in the process!

Some considerations are whether the size of the holding cup is large enough for your jewelry and which cleaning modes are available. You’ll want to match the cleaning mode and cleaning solution to the condition of your jewelry. Plus, if you have especially tarnished or blackened pieces, a steam cleaner might not have the chops to clean them fully.

4. Use an ultrasonic cleaner (proceed with caution). Ultrasonic cleaners work by sending sonic micro-vibrations through liquid (usually water or a gentle cleaning solution) to jostle free dirt and residue stuck to the surface of the piece. This is a very effective way to clean diamonds and is common practice for trained professionals. However, it can be risky when tried at home.

Even consumer-grade ultrasonic cleaners produce a brilliant result, but the risks often overshadow the rewards. If you’re cleaning jewelry with fragile diamond settings, they can knock stones loose and cause more harm than good. The vibrations can cause diamonds to become loose or break free.

If you use an ultrasonic cleaner, be judicial when selecting appropriate pieces for the method. Anything with pavé stones or delicate settings should be left out of the question. If your stone has a lower clarity grade or has been treated by a non-permanent method to attain its color, it is not suitable for ultrasonic cleaning either. Check the diamond’s grading report to be sure. While Shane Co. never treats its stones to enhance their color using non-permanent methods, some less reputable jewelers do. If your stone didn’t come from Shane Co., it may have been treated to enhance its color by a method other than heating with beryllium, and putting such a stone in an ultrasonic could remove its enhanced color.

Keeping Diamonds Clean and Safe Care Practices

4 easy ways to keep your diamonds sparkling clean.

So you already have your diamonds professionally cleaned twice a year, clean them yourself every other month, and wipe them down daily, but dirt and grime still cloud their brilliant shine? Don’t worry, all hope is not lost. Here are some lifestyle alterations that can help your diamonds shine on.

1. Handle as sparingly as possible. This one seems obvious, but it’s sort of like avoiding touching your face when you’re sick. Many jewelry owners subconsciously adjust a ring, fiddle with a necklace, and otherwise touch their diamond jewelry constantly without even realizing it. And each time they do, they deposit finger oil that attracts more dirt. Try to be aware of this bad habit and kick it for a longer-lasting diamond sparkle.

2. Avoid thick lotions and creams. Whether you’re applying sunscreen before a day at the beach or hairspray before a night on the town, this is an excellent time to remove your diamond ring. In general, you should avoid applying thick lotions, creams, and sprays on or around your diamond to prevent residue build-up or discoloration.

3. Avoid sweat, grease, and grime. Your diamond doesn’t have bills to pay or mouths to feed, so leave it off your finger when doing manual labor or cooking! There is no sense in subjecting your diamond to any activities that will cause a build-up of dirt, sweat, or grease.

4. Store diamonds properly. A key to keeping your diamonds in good condition is proper storage. Here’s how to keep your diamonds (and other jewelry) safe while not in use.

 • Avoid extreme temperatures and humidity. Admittedly, this one is more for the precious metal that your diamond is likely attached to. Nevertheless, high humidity and temperature extremes can tarnish or discolor jewelry. Store your diamond jewelry in a temperate place with consistently low humidity.
 • Store your diamonds away from other jewelry. Because they rank a 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, they can scratch every other material in your jewelry collection. That’s why it’s best to store them away from other gemstones — and even each other. Instead, store them in their original box, a felt-lined compartmentalized jewelry box, or wrapped in a microfiber cloth.
 • Store away from dirt and corrosion. A dusty old heirloom box is not the best place to store your diamond jewelry. Equally important, that smelly, tarnished pawn shop find doesn’t belong next to your grandma’s wedding ring. The smell, and even corrosion, could transfer over to the priceless piece. Instead, keep your jewelry in a clean and well-maintained space.

Final Thoughts

There you have it. You are now fully equipped to take care of your diamond jewelry for unending enjoyment. And remember, our free lifetime warranty covers every aspect of your jewelry, including the center stone. That means we will take care of you even if you do lose a few pavé stones during an ultrasonic cleaning tragedy. But if you still have questions about how to clean your diamond, refer to our FAQs below.

Frequently Asked

How can I make my diamond shiny at home?

The best way to clean a diamond at home is to put it into a bath of warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Let it soak for 20-40 minutes and wipe it dry with a lint-free cloth. If stubborn stuck-on dirt remains, repeat the process but scrub the ring gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush this time.

Can you clean diamonds with vinegar?

Yes and no. Vinegar will not harm diamonds themselves as they are impervious to acids. However, it will harm other semi-precious stones as well as any metals with a copper alloy like rose gold. Since vinegar is temperamental with some materials likely to be found in your jewelry box, it’s best to avoid this solution altogether.

Is it OK to clean diamonds with toothpaste?

No, it isn’t safe to clean diamonds with toothpaste. The abrasive grit will cause harm to any metal settings, rings, or chains.

Can I use Windex to clean my diamond ring?

According to The Knot, Windex is benign enough to be used on diamonds in a 50/50 solution with hydrogen peroxide. Still, though, we recommend not taking any chances with household cleaning products that could potentially damage your stone or ring.

Why does my diamond look cloudy?

Over time, finger oil builds up on your diamond’s facets through regular use. Dirt then sticks to the oil, causing a dull, cloudy appearance. In this case, simply cleaning the rock will suffice. If the cloudy look isn’t replaced by shine after a good cleaning, it could be a permanent affliction caused by inclusions (or defects) in the stone itself.

The story of diamonds has long been a romantic tale. From their formation underneath the earth for millions of years to their use in sentimental jewelry like custom engagement rings, anniversary gifts, birthday presents, and wedding bands, it’s no wonder we find their story so intoxicating. But what about the mining process? Did you know that the diamond industry actually creates jobs in communities all over the world? Read on to find out how diamonds are mined and what makes this process so special.

What Type of Mining Is Used for Diamonds?

There are three main processes for mining diamonds: alluvial mining, marine mining, and pipe mining.

Alluvial Mining

Alluvial diamond mining focuses on extracting diamonds found in the sand and mud along river banks. Over a long period of time, these diamonds have been carried by the river from a rock formation where they were grown to their eventual place deposited along the river banks. Alluvial miners will sift through the sediment to find these gemstones. Larger alluvial mining projects may separate the earth from the water in order to simplify the process.

Marine Mining

Marine diamond mining, as its name suggests, occurs in the ocean. This process uses large ships to dredge up material along the seafloor, then transfers it to a treatment plant on the ship where the gravel and other earth are sifted to locate the diamonds. Leftover sediment is usually returned to the ocean. Before any ships go out, the seafloor is scanned and sampled, and a plan is devised for which areas are most likely to hold diamonds.

Pipe Mining

The method of diamond mining you’re probably most familiar with is called pipe mining. First, prospectors locate the primary sources for pipe deposits (in other words, where the diamonds are most likely to be found). Ore samples are then collected to evaluate the area. Then, shanks are inserted into the ground and soil is extracted. Raw rock and soil are not usually examined onsite, instead being transported to plants where the ore is processed and the rough diamonds can be extracted.

Where Are Diamonds Found?

Natural diamonds have been found all over the world! In fact, 35 countries have been known to hold deposits of natural diamond, including the United States. Some of the most well-known countries for diamond mining include Australia, Botswana, Brazil, China, Russia, and South Africa.

How Is a Rough Diamond Extracted?

The process of extracting a rough diamond is a long one. It takes time and effort to obtain the rough diamonds that will eventually become beautiful pieces of jewelry.

Stage One: Crushing

Ore is collected and transferred to a crusher, which will crush the much larger pieces of ore into smaller ones, making them more manageable. A secondary crusher is sometimes used to break the ore down into even smaller pieces.

Stage Two: Scrubbing

Pieces of ore are scrubbed to remove any excess material. They are then screened and pieces of ore that are smaller than 1.5mm are removed, as it’s too expensive to try to extract diamonds from these small pieces.

Stage Three: Cyclonic Separation Plant

A solution is mixed, containing ferrosilicon powder and water, and then mixed with the diamond-bearing ore. This mixture is then put into a cyclone and tumbled, forcing the materials with the highest density to sink to the bottom of the cyclone.

Stage Four: Recovery

The leftover diamond-rich concentrate goes through various processes, including magnetic susceptibility, x-ray luminescence, and crystallographic laser fluorescence. These processes will separate the rough diamonds from other dense materials that were collected in the cyclone separation plant. Diamonds will also emit flashes of light, which are detected by sensors, and in turn the diamonds receive a blast of air and are spit into a collection box.

Stage Five: Cleaning, Weighing, and Packaging

The diamonds are then cleaned in an acid solution, washed, weighed, and packaged for transport. Each container is thoroughly sealed with a tamper-resistant seal and numbered onsite.

You may have heard about lab-created diamonds, also known as lab-grown diamonds, popping up more often over the past few years. But what actually are lab-created diamonds, and how are they different from natural diamonds?

Are Lab-Created Diamonds Real?

A lab-created diamond is a diamond that is grown in a controlled laboratory setting through a process which helps to mimic the structure of a natural diamond as it’s being formed. While natural diamonds can take millions of years (and an extensive amount of pressure!) to form, lab-created diamonds can be formed within only weeks. Although they are not the same as natural diamonds, their chemical structure is inherently similar, and if they are not graded by the GIA and marked as lab-created, it’s possible to confuse them for natural diamonds because of their similarities in structure.

The Cost of Lab-Created Diamonds

Because of their lower price point, you can get a bigger diamond for your budget with a lab-grown diamond. Shane Co. carries both natural and lab-grown diamonds, so you can make the choice that works best for you and your significant other!

How Are Lab-Created Diamonds Made?

Labs that produce lab-created diamonds use two different methods to create them: High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT), and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

With HPHT, a small diamond “seed” is put into a piece of carbon, then pressurized to 1.5 million pounds per square inch using a belt press, cubic press, or split-sphere press. It’s also exposed to temperatures ranging over 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit. The combined pressure and heat melt the carbon, forming a diamond around the “seed” that is subsequently cooled once formed.

CVD also begins with a diamond seed, which is placed inside a sealed chamber and then heated to over 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s filled with carbon-rich gases, such as methane and hydrogen, then ionized into plasma using a technology that’s similar to lasers or microwaves. This process breaks down the molecular bond of the gas, causing pure carbon to begin to stick to the seed, forming a new diamond.

What Makes Shane Co. Diamonds Better

At Shane Co., we value long-lasting relationships — whether it’s the love of two partners or our relationships with our customers and diamond suppliers. We believe that an engagement ring is more than just a token, it’s a symbol of your love. We get first pick of all natural and lab-grown diamonds because of our long-standing relationships with our suppliers, enabling us to ensure only the highest quality for all our stones. Whether you choose a natural or a lab-grown diamond for your engagement ring, you’ll have all the perks of our Free Lifetime Warranty…because that’s what a friend would do.

You’ve decided you found the one – the peanut butter to your jelly, the milk to your cookies, your one and only, your true love. And that means it’s time to plan the proposal. But wait! Before you ask your partner the big question, it’s time to pick out the perfect engagement ring. Luckily, the experts at Shane Co. have put together this engagement ring guide to help you make the right choice.

1. Find their style

An engagement ring is entirely personal. After all, it’s one of the only pieces of jewelry your partner is likely to wear everyday (and forever). So you want to make sure that you’re choosing an engagement ring they really want, rather than just whatever is popular or “in style” at the time of your proposal. Tools like Shane Co.’s engagement ring quiz can help you to figure out what they may want in a ring. But, the best way to discover their style is take hints from your sweetie themselves.

 • What kind of jewelry do they wear?
 • Is their style classic, modern or eclectic?
 • Have they brought up engagement rings before?

To gather more information, asking their family and friends is always a good option. Just make sure they know to keep it quiet if you’re looking to make the proposal a surprise.

2. How much should you spend on an engagement ring?

First, figure out how much you can afford to spend on the engagement ring before you begin your shopping journey. That way, you won’t be presented with rings that are out of your budget so you can more accurately compare styles and stones. Remember that there’s no “rule” to how much you should spend – it relies entirely on your personal finances, priorities and wants. One thing to think about is that an engagement almost always precedes a wedding, so if you want to start saving for an extravagant wedding party, it might make sense to structure your budget accordingly. At Shane Co., you can always upgrade their ring later down the line. With our comprehensive upgrade program, you’ll get the full value of your first engagement ring purchase.

3. How much should I save for an engagement ring?

If you haven’t already begun to save up for a ring, now is the time to start. You can do this by setting a timeline for yourself, putting aside a certain amount per week/month, deciding on a particular amount and simply saving until you reach it, or taking advantage of programs like layaway or credit cards. We recommend, however, having at least half the cost of the engagement ring available at the time of purchase, even if you are able to do monthly payments in the future.

4. Do your research

One of the most important steps in making any big decision is doing your research. Unless you’re already a diamond and jewelry expert (which most of us aren’t), you probably have some questions regarding how to buy a diamond engagement ring, what the 4 C’s mean, what a semi-mount is, and what are the differences between yellow, white and rose gold – and those are just the first questions that come to mind.

The Four C’s

The four C’s are well-known elements of choosing a diamond. They include the stone’s cut, clarity, color, and carat. Deciding which of the four C’s matter the most to you can help make the process of buying a diamond a lot simpler!

Semi-mounts

A semi-mount refers to a separate engagement ring setting and center stone, that are then put into place by a jeweler. At Shane Co., we sell both preset engagement rings (with the stone already “set” in the ring), and design-your-own semi-mounts.

Diamond shapes

The main diamond shapes include round, cushion, princess, emerald, marquise, heart, oval, pear, and radiant.

Metal types

At Shane Co., we offer engagement rings in a variety of different metals, using high-quality 14k white, yellow, and rose gold as well as durable platinum.

If this seems like a lot of ground to cover, you can just head to a Shane Co. store to speak with one of our jewelry experts. Our staff is noncommission and no-pressure, so even if you’re not ready to buy, it can help to speak with a member of our sales team to learn more about the engagement ring shopping process. You can even conduct subjectivity tests (how do you conduct subjectivity kits?) in-store and compare our diamonds with other jewelers’ to see the Shane Co. difference.

Start with a setting and design your own engagement ring!

5. Where to buy an engagement ring

With the popularity of online shopping rising more than ever, Shane Co. is excited to be able to offer a variety of ways to shop for an engagement ring. You’re always welcome to visit a Shane Co. store near you, but you also have the ability to Browse all of our engagement rings at ShaneCo.com! You can even make a virtual or in-store appointment to get help from one of our expert jewelry consultants. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to create the perfect engagement ring and proposal…because that’s what a friend would do.

6. Buy that ring!

Now that you know how to buy an engagement ring and where to get one,, it’s time to visit a jeweler and make your purchase. You may want to compare a few rings first to see which ones best match the engagement ring you’ve imagined, so it can help to bring in photos if you have a specific idea in mind. Finally, ask your salesperson about any payment plans, re-sizing and purchase timelines before you get ready to pop the question. It will usually take a little time for your engagement ring to be totally ready to go – you’ll probably be informed of this, but now’s the time to ask any questions you still have before taking the jump.

7. Take advantage of exclusive perks at Shane Co.

After purchasing the ring, a lot of scary scenarios may run through your mind:

 • What is my partner doesn’t like it?
 • What if we want to get a different ring in the future?
 • What if it gets damaged or the diamond falls out?

At Shane Co., we offer all our customers a 60-Day Money-Back Guarantee, upgrade program, and Free Lifetime Warranty that even includes your center stone. That way, you can feel confident knowing that your engagement ring is safe. Just bring it in every six months or so for cleaning and inspection, so it can remain as perfect and sparkly as the day you bought it.

Want to start shopping today? You can see all our unique engagement ring settings online, visit us in-store, or shop all pre-set rings for an easy, enjoyable experience.

Three Platinum Diamond Engagement Rings

You’ve probably heard of the 4 Cs of diamonds, and maybe you’ve even heard of diamond clarity. But what exactly is diamond clarity, and how does it affect your diamond buying decisions?

Diamond clarity is, simply put, the appearance or lack of inclusions and blemishes in a diamond’s surface. All diamonds have a certain number of inclusions — it’s one of the ways you can tell a real diamond from a manufactured one. Because natural diamonds are formed from carbon that has been exposed to years and years of heat and pressure deep within the earth, they always have a variety of internal and external characteristics that affect their clarity. These inclusions are caused by small crystals that become trapped in a diamond while it is forming. As the crystal grows, it can sometimes develop irregularities in its atomic structure.

The Diamond Clarity Scale

When the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) was founded in 1953 by Richard T. Liddicoat and his colleagues, the diamond grading system and clarity scale as we know it today came into existence. At the time, jewelers were using terms like “loupe clean” or “piqué” to describe the clarity of diamonds, leading to misinterpretations and no concrete standards by which to judge diamond clarity. Since the formation of this system, almost all jewelers use the same clarity terms that we do at Shane Co., even those in other countries or speaking different languages. The current clarity scale lists the types of diamonds below.

Diamond Clarity Chart

Included (I1, I2, I3):

This range of diamonds has inclusions that are obvious under 10x magnification. This may affect the transparency and brilliance of the stone. I3 diamonds have the highest amount of obvious inclusions, while I2 and I1 diamonds have slightly less, respectively.

Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2):

In these graded stones, inclusions are noticeable, but not obvious, under 10x magnification. SI1 are slightly less included than SI2. These diamonds are a great value because they are generally lower in price while still maintaining much of their brilliance and fire. They are an extremely popular diamond type.

Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2):

For these diamonds, inclusions can be observed under 10x magnification, but are not as easy to spot and can be characterized as minor. VS1 diamonds are a slightly higher grade than VS2. These stones are also very popular with shoppers.

Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2):

The inclusions in these diamonds are so small that they are difficult for even a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification. VVS2 diamonds may have a few more inclusions than VVS1 diamonds. This range of stones is less popular than VS and SI diamonds, despite their high clarity, as they come with a higher price tag.

Internally Flawless (IF):

With internally flawless diamonds, no inclusions are visible under 10x magnification. A few small surface blemishes may still be visible. IF diamonds are more expensive and less popular than other grades, but offer a higher display of brilliance in every stone.

Flawless (FL):

No inclusions or blemishes are visible under 10x magnification in the highest grade of diamonds. FL diamonds are so rare that less than 1% of all diamonds make their home in this grade. These are the most expensive types of diamonds and generally considered the most beautiful.

Many inclusions and blemishes are much too small to be seen with the naked eye. To the diamond buyer, you may not be able to tell the difference between a Slightly Included diamond and a Very Slightly Included diamond, but an expert jeweler certainly will. It’s important to buy your diamond from a reputable source, like the experienced jewelers at Shane Co. We always want our customers to be as informed as possible before making their purchase, to ensure they are getting the diamond they truly want.

Clarity Grading Factors

There are five factors that jewelers consider when determining diamond clarity grade. All of these factors are taken into consideration before a grade is given. They include:

Size:

The bigger the inclusion, the lower on the clarity scale the diamond will fall. Very large inclusions can even impact the durability of the stone. The size of the inclusion relative to the size of the stone is also considered. If there are large inclusions on a larger diamond, they won’t have as much of an effect on the clarity grade as large inclusions on a smaller stone. Inclusions with the largest impact on clarity are called “grade setters,” as they are the ultimate determination of diamond clarity.

Nature:

This refers to the type of inclusion present within the diamond, as well as its depth within the stone. Deeper characteristics are labeled inclusions, while surface characteristics are labeled blemishes.

Number:

This one’s easy. The number refers to the amount of inclusions present on the diamond. Generally speaking, the higher the number of inclusions, the lower the clarity grade. However, if a diamond has a larger number of less visible inclusions, it may actually grade higher than a diamond with a smaller number of very visible inclusions.

Location:

This refers to the position of the characteristic on the diamond. If an inclusion is closer to the center of the diamond, it will usually have a greater impact on the clarity. The shape, cut and facet arrangements of the stone can also have an effect on the clarity, as they can make certain inclusions/blemishes more or less visible. An inclusion that risks the integrity and durability of the diamond will also have a large effect on the diamond’s clarity.

Relief:

Relief simply refers to the distinctness of the inclusion. In other words, how visible it is on the diamond. The greater the relief, the lower the diamond will rate on the clarity scale.

Types of Inclusions

Bearding:

These are hairlike lines that usually occur during diamond cutting. These inclusions extend from the girdle into the surface of the stone. Heavy bearding appears as a fuzzy fringe.

Graining:

Graining is caused by irregular crystal growth and can appear as lines, streaks or reflections within the diamond.

Cavity:

A large or deep opening in the stone’s surface. These inclusions are generally created during the polishing process, when an internal inclusion is dislodged from the diamond. This leaves an opening on the surface of the diamond, which often traps dirt and can become dark in color.

Feather:

A feather inclusion is a small crack within the diamond. It can look transparent or resemble a featherlike form. These inclusions can affect the durability of the diamond, particularly if they approach the surface or girdle.

Chip:

A small opening on the surface of the diamond. This is usually caused by man-made wear and tear to the diamond.

Cloud:

A cloud inclusion refers to a cluster of crystals found grouped together. When they grow large enough, these clouds can make the diamond appear hazy and affect the “sparkle” aspect of the stone.

Crystal:

This inclusion follows its name: It is a crystal that has been trapped within the diamond. They can range from colorless to colors like black, red and green, depending on the nature of the crystal.

Knot:

A knot is a white or clear crystal that’s reached the surface of a diamond.

Needle:

This refers to a needle-shaped inclusion. They can sometimes appear in clusters, having a greater effect on the clarity of the diamond.

Pinpoints:

Pinpoints are small black or white crystals trapped inside the diamond.

Twinning Wisps:

Twinning wisps are a series of pinpoints, clouds or crystals that form as a diamond grows.

Indented Natural:

This inclusion refers to an area of rough diamond that dips below the surface of the polished diamond, usually found at the girdle.

What to Look for When Buying Loose Diamonds

Inspecting A Diamond With A Loupe

Oftentimes, customers will get caught up in the importance of the clarity grade when buying a diamond, incorrectly assuming that a Flawless diamond is the best purchase to make, simply because it’s the rarest. However, the appearance of clarity is greatly affected by the size and shape of the diamond. Diamond shapes like emerald and Asscher have facets that emphasize the transparency of the stone. This means that inclusions can be more visible than they are in diamond shapes like round or princess. These shapes hide inclusions much better because of their brilliant facet pattern.

Larger diamonds can also make inclusions appear more visible, as the facets are also larger. If you choose to prioritize the carat, you’ll also have to go for a higher clarity grade to reduce the appearance of imperfections on the stone.

How to Buy a Diamond (Without Breaking Your Budget)

The most important thing to remember when shopping for a diamond is not to let yourself get pressured into purchasing a more expensive diamond simply because you believe it’s a better value. Shopping at Shane Co. can help make this decision easy, as we have a noncommission staff that won’t pressure you into spending more money. Figure out what aspects of the diamond you care the most about, and also consider how the stone will look in the setting of your choice. Picking a band with pavé-set diamonds for extra sparkle or choosing a style such as a halo engagement ring can make the stone appear larger without having to increase clarity and go over your budget.

Keep in mind that the grade of a diamond doesn’t necessarily represent its value. You can look at a variety of diamonds within the same grade and find that some are much more appealing to you than others. Shane Co. buys diamonds based not only on their GIA grade, but also on how they look: we hand-pick the prettiest stones, taking care to prioritize sparkle and beauty. Our store lighting replicates natural daylight, so you can see the true appearance of your diamond and feel confident in your purchase. Ultimately, choosing a diamond is a very personal decision that only you can make.

Three halo engagement rings.

Even if you’re a fan of Shane Co.’s wide selection of sparkling engagement rings, you may not be aware of our comprehensive upgrade program. Whether you’ve had your engagement ring for a while and are looking for a change, want to surprise your significant other by adding a new twist on their ring, or are just in the market for something a little different, taking advantage of our upgrade program is just another way we get to be your friend in the jewelry business.

But what, exactly, can you do to update your engagement ring? Read on to find out!

1. Upgrade the center stone

The center stone is the focal point of your engagement ring – whether you’re sporting a traditional diamond or a sparkling sapphire or ruby, it’s likely the first thing your eyes go to when checking out some gorgeous bling. Did you know that Shane Co. will put the full value of your stone towards any new upgrade? That means it’s easy to trade in your current diamond for a bigger one or switch out your sapphire for a diamond or ruby. Psst – an updated center stone also makes a great anniversary gift!

2. Change up your setting

Five diamond engagement ring settings.

Maybe your style has changed over the years, or maybe you just want to try out something different. Either way, upgrading your current setting can be the perfect way to get an all-new look. If you have a sentimental attachment to your center stone, updating your setting ensures that you can keep all those warm and fuzzy feelings – just with a different band.

3. Add a decorative crown

Nothing’s better than more bling, right? Along with upgrading your setting, adding a decorative crown to your current center stone can create a fresh look without trading in your entire ring. Choose from sparkling diamond single and double (or more) details, or add a pop of color with sapphires or rubies.

4. Add an engraving

Sometimes, there’s no better way to say something than to write it down. Adding an engraving with your wedding date, you or your partner’s initials, a sweet nickname, coordinates of the place you met, or another meaningful message can add a whole new layer to your engagement ring. At Shane Co., all engravings can be done for a flat fee of $50 – so it’s never been easier to do.

5. Add a band (or stack ‘em!)

Diamond engagement ring with vintage and pave wedding bands.

Picking out a wedding band to pair with your engagement ring can add an entirely new element to your left-hand look. Try an on-trend contour band, a classic gold band, or something paved with diamonds! If you already have your wedding band, adding a stackable ring to your collection can be a great way to spice things up.

There you have it! Whether you’re treating yourself to a new decorative crown or upgrading their center stone as a memorable gift, there are so many ways to take advantage of Shane Co.’s trade-in and upgrade policy. Jeweler inspecting loose diamonds.

You may have already heard about our amazing Free Lifetime Warranty – you know, the one that even includes your center stone. Because we aim to provide the best customer service possible, we offer a lifetime warranty that protects your jewelry even in catastrophic events like the loss of a diamond.

What comes with your warranty:

 • Free maintenance and jewelry repair
 • Free resizing
 • Free cleaning and polishing
 • Free inspections
 • Free lost stone replacement

That means yes, we will replace your center stone, or any of the smaller diamonds on your piece free of charge in the event that one comes loose and unfortunately disappears.

How do I make sure my warranty is active?

In order to receive the benefits of our lifetime warranty, we ask that you visit us for cleanings and inspections every 6 months or less. This not only ensures that your jewelry is protected and ready for everyday wear, it also allows us to keep track of any potential damage so we can take care of it before it becomes a bigger issue. For example, if we discover that some of the prongs on your engagement ring are loose, then we’ll be able to tighten them before your precious stone is lost.

Plus, regular cleanings are the best way to keep your jewelry looking as beautiful as the day you bought it. And who doesn’t love more sparkle?

By the way – if you happen to live in an area where you cannot physically go to a Shane Co. store, you can mail your jewelry in to us for inspections and cleanings. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to enjoy a lifetime of wear.

What if I inherited my Shane Co. jewelry?

As a fourth generation business, we know the importance of passing on traditions, as well as the meaning that a piece of a jewelry can hold. When you receive an heirloom that’s been passed along within your family, your jewelry will continue to be covered under our warranty.

Is anything excluded from the Shane Co. warranty?

Unfortunately, we are not able to fully cover your jewelry in the event it is stolen. However, if we are provided with a police report of the piece we will offer a discount for you to purchase replacement jewelry.

We are also unable to protect jewelry that is not capable of being reworked to look like new, such as leather, rubber, stainless steel, carbon fiber, and tungsten. We recommend that any valuable piece be ensured against theft and total loss. If your insurance company requires an appraisal on their own form, feel free to bring it in and we’ll fill it out for you, free of charge.

To learn more about the high standards we hold our jewelry production to, you can read more on The Loupe or visit our website.

There’s no doubt that buying a diamond can be a daunting process. With so much information to sift through, it can be difficult to know what’s truthful and what’s simply opinion. This blog post will help to explain the different kinds of diamond certifications, like GIA, GSI and IGI, how Shane Co. grades their diamonds, and what to look for in a diamond to ensure you are getting the best value for your budget.

What is diamond certification?

A diamond certificate is a grade issued by an accredited independent gemological laboratory. It will inform the purchaser of all the known facts about the diamond, including its carat weight and measurements as well as grades for the other three Cs: cut, clarity and color.

While labs follow their own set of guidelines when it comes to grading, these guidelines are not universal among industry professionals. Ultimately, the grade is subjective, which means it’s the opinion of the particular grader of that diamond. Every independently graded diamond will come with a physical piece of paper with all of this information listed on it. The certificate will also include a graphic demonstrating the location of any inclusions/flaws within the diamond.

Loose diamonds.

Who grades the diamonds?

Shane Co. uses both an internal grading system as well as some of the world’s leading independent diamond grading laboratories. Often, we use multiple labs to ensure that our own grading standards fall in line with the rest of the world’s diamond experts. Because there is no universal set of criteria with which to grade a diamond, each laboratory (and, more specifically, each individual grader) could potentially provide a slightly different grade on the same stone. The most well-known diamond certification laboratories include:

GIA

The Gemological Institute of America created the 4Cs grading system and is known for having some of the strictest and most consistent grading standards of all the leading laboratories.

IGI

The International Gemological Institute tends to grade diamonds somewhat looser in color and clarity when compared to the GIA, but is still consistent in its grading standards.

AGS

The American Gem Society was the first lab to provide diamond cut grades, using its own cut grading scale, which varies from 0 to 9. Their grading standards are nearly comparable to GIA’s, and they have an excellent reputation for grading consistency.

GSI

Gemological Science International’s grading standards and consistency are similar to those of the IGI and GIA, making them another valuable resource for diamond certification.

Shane Co. grading

All Shane Co. diamonds are directly imported from the diamond capitals of the world after being hand-picked by Tom Shane and the rest of the Shane Co. buying team. We have worked with many of the same diamond cutters for generations, ensuring ethically sourced diamonds that are the prettiest in every grade. Because we buy our diamonds directly from the source in cash (instead of credit), we get first pick of all newly cut stones. In fact, our standards are so high that we end up picking only 1 out of every 10 diamonds we are shown.

After the diamonds make it to our jewelry experts, they are graded according to these same rigid and widespread quality standards, whether or not they are sent to an independent laboratory. Our internal experts are all GIA accredited and have had extensive training within GIA’s curriculum — a big part of this involves looking at hundreds of diamonds and aligning our eyes with industry leaders.

If a diamond you’ve been looking at has only been graded within our internal system and you still would like to have it inspected by an independent lab, we’re more than happy to send it out and have it graded for a fee. Our first priority is to make sure you feel totally comfortable with the quality of the diamond you’re buying.

Diamond subjectivity test

Ultimately, although certifications can provide a sense of security about the diamond you’re buying, the only way to truly know the quality of a diamond is to see it for yourself. Shane Co. offers an educational diamond subjectivity test in all of our stores. In this process, diamonds of the same grade are put next to each other and inspected both with the naked eye and with a loupe, so you can see for yourself the difference in quality between a Shane Co. diamond and its competitors, even within the same grade.

Check out the video below to see this process in detail.

Protecting your diamond

While most jewelers include some kind of warranty with the sale of an engagement ring, Shane Co. is one of the only stores that includes a completely free lifetime warranty that also covers your center stone. This is included in the price of your ring, which means that even if your diamond is somehow damaged, scratched or otherwise impaired, we will fix or replace it to its full value. We understand that this is a big and meaningful purchase, and we’re thrilled to be a part of your journey.

To learn more about diamond grading, visit our website, or explore our selection of loose diamonds online or in-store.

]]>
With the new decade upon us, the trendsetting team at Shane Co. is anticipating which engagement ring trends you’ll be seeing everywhere this year. Check it out!

1. Geometric Shapes

We predict Art Deco will make a comeback in 2020 — but with a modern twist. Geometric diamonds like baguette and emerald cuts will be go-tos for our new brides, with their sleek, regal look pairing well with both solitaire and vintage settings.

These diamond shapes are great for the bride who is both on-trend and classic, just like celebrity icons Jennifer Lawrence and Jennifer Lopez, who both rock emerald cut stones. Emerald cuts will be particularly popular for center stones, with baguettes reigning for accents in engagement ring settings as well as in wedding bands. Here are a few of our favorite examples of this upcoming trend:

2. Yellow Gold

Brides have officially moved away from white gold, embracing the more timeless look of yellow gold engagement rings.

We predict that in 2020, Hailey Bieber and Meghan Markle will no longer stand out for their classic yellow gold engagement rings. The on-trend metal is most often seen in solitaire settings, which became a popular style in 2019.

Brides also love yellow gold for its versatility, as it allows them to be more flexible in choosing their diamond based on color. With a yellow gold setting, having a more yellow diamond is much less noticeable. Take a look at the gorgeous yellow gold settings below for inspiration.

3. Sapphires

As we’ve seen in the past few years, brides are increasingly looking for ways to make their engagement rings more personalized and unique to stand out among their friends.

Choosing a colored stone for your center stone allows you to create a unique, personalized look without losing that engagement ring “feel.”

Sapphires in particular are a perfect alternative to diamonds, as their hardness makes them durable for everyday wear. While the traditional blue sapphire worn by Kate Middleton remains the most popular engagement ring shade, sapphires come in every color of the rainbow, and we expect brides to branch out to even more shades in 2020. The blingy sapphire engagement rings below may just change your mind about this sometimes looked-over trend.

4. Floral Halos

This year, we expect to see a resurgence of floral, Victorian-inspired engagement rings, thanks to their popularity with celebrity trendsetters.

Princess Eugenie, Lady Gaga, Elizabeth Olsen, Katy Perry, and Irina Shayk all stepped out with this style of ring in 2019 and we anticipate that the trend will only grow in 2020.

A simple band paired with a floral-inspired halo gives the ring a unique, feminine look without losing the vintage feel of the halo. We most often see this style paired with a brightly colored sapphire rather than a traditional diamond. View our favorites below.

5. Unique Solitaires

With classic solitaire engagement rings seeing a rise in popularity over the last two years, we don’t anticipate this changing much in 2020. What we do foresee is couples looking for more unique solitaire rings. Subtle accents like under-halos and east-west settings have become increasingly popular, as they stick to a classic look that puts the focus on the diamond but also adds a bit of personality. Here are some examples:

Budgeting tip: If you pay down half and put the rest on your card, your payments will only be $130/month.

Halo Diamond Vintage Engagement Ring in White Gold.

For this gorgeous Halo Diamond Vintage Engagement Ring in White Gold set with a 1.22-carat emerald cut diamond, the total cost of your engagement ring would be $7,425. When you buy it with the Shane Co. Credit Card, each monthly payment would be $619 when taking advantage of our 12 months special financing. By paying down half up front, your payments come down to $310/month.

Classic Solitaire Engagement Ring.

This Classic Solitaire Engagement Ring in 14k Rose Gold set with a sparkling 2-carat oval diamond would cost $11,325. Using the Shane Co. Round Double Halo Engagement Ring.

For this show-stopping Round Double Halo Engagement Ring set with a 5.8mm (.89 carat) round traditional blue sapphire, your engagement ring would cost a total of $3,645. By making monthly payments of $304 to your card for 12 months, it’ll be all yours! Pay down half, and your payments come out to only $152.

Pear-Shaped Diamond Three-Stone Engagement Ring.

With this Pear-Shaped Diamond Three-Stone Engagement Ring in 14k White Gold set with a .76-carat pear diamond, the total cost for your engagement ring comes out to $4,485. With 12 monthly payments, that’s $374/month. If you pay half up front, your payments will be $187!

Budgeting made easy

Buying an engagement ring is a big purchase — it’s meaningful, sentimental, and long-lasting. Here are a few more tips to make sure you budget correctly for the perfect ring:

 1. Start with a budget. Having an idea of what you’re going to spend on the ring will make it a whole lot easier to find the right one. Start by browsing online, then talk to one of our non-commissioned sales associates and let them know what your budget is before you even begin trying out rings.
 2. Save up. Even if you plan on using a credit card or another financing service for the total amount, it’s recommended that you save up at least one-third to one-half the cost of your ring. This is to ensure that you’re able to make your payments on time, and will keep you from going overboard with your purchase.
 3. Prioritize. Decide which aspect of the engagement ring is the most important for you or your partner — do they have their eye on a diamond-studded halo setting? Or are they looking for a larger diamond to take center stage? Knowing where you want the bulk of your budget to go can help a lot when you start your shopping journey.
 4. Take your time. The ring will be worn (hopefully) forever, so there’s no need to rush! Do your research beforehand and make sure you’re getting something that will withstand the test of time. Whether that means a more classic design, a favorite colored stone, or a ring that you won’t mind upgrading later on down the line, this is a decision that merits a lot of thought.

We all love the look of sparkly ring stack – but it can be tricky to create the perfect one. Luckily, your friend in the jewelry business is here to help.

Engagement ring stacks

Sure, one diamond ring is gorgeous…but two is always better than one. Adding a band to your engagement ring and wedding stack can create a stand-out look that allows you to add some extra bling to your ring finger. Plus, a new band to stack is a great anniversary or birthday gift (psst – you can drop a hint on your favorite styles on ShaneCo.com!).

To create an Instagram-worth engagement ring stack, try pairing different but similar metals with different styles of rings. Check out the videos below for examples.

For our white gold stack, we paired this stunning Vintage Knife Edge Solitaire Ring featuring an emerald-cut diamond with this Baguette & Round Diamond Wedding Band and this Pavé-Set Diamond Wedding Band in 14k White Gold. The result? Sparkling, modern designs that create a cohesive look.

For our rose gold stack, we chose this stunning Solitaire Engagement Ring with an oval diamond center stone, paired with this Classic Pavé-Set Diamond Wedding Band and this Vintage Diamond Wedding Band. This creates a unique vintage-inspired stack in our signature shade of blush-toned rose gold.

Right-hand ring stacks

Of course, you don’t need to be rocking an engagement ring to pull off a sophisticated stack. The trick to pairing up right-hand rings? Get creative! Mix and match metals, styles, heights and more to create something totally original. The more contrast you can create, the more interesting the ring stack will appear on your finger.

For this stack, we paired a Diamond Cluster Wedding Band in 14k Yellow Gold with this Round Diamond Band in 14k White Gold, a Pavé-Set Baguette Diamond Wedding Band and this Oval & Round Diamond Cluster Band in 14k Rose Gold.

For a more delicate stack, try this: pair our Diamond Criss-Cross Wedding Band with this Vintage Wedding Band, this Diamond Wedding Band in Rose Gold with Pave Setting and that gorgeous Pavé-Set Baguette Diamond Wedding Band.

Multi-finger stacks

Want to add allure by wearing your rings on a few fingers? Create this contemporary look by pairing thin, similar rings in different sizes according to how you wish to wear them.

To recreate this look, pair our 14k Yellow Gold Wedding Band with this 14k Rose Gold Wedding Band. You can also stack a band with some diamonds to add a little more sparkle.

Want to try out this trend? Send your ring stacks to socialshane@gmail.com or message us on Facebook or Instagram to see if your look will be featured on our feed!

The post How to Buy a Diamond: The Ultimate Guide appeared first on The Loupe.

]]>
Cut, Carat, Clarity and Color – even if you’re aware of the 4 Cs, the process of buying a diamond can still seem completely intimidating. How do you know you’re making the right choice? Which “C” should you prioritize when looking for a stone? How do you make sure that it fits into the ring setting you chose? Don’t worry! Your friends at Shane Co. are here to help with How to Buy a Diamond: The Ultimate Guide.

Step one: Learn the 4 Cs

Three loose Shane Co. diamonds.

The grading criteria that jewelers use to determine the quality of a diamond. Here’s a quick tutorial just in case:

Carat: Diamonds are measured in carats, which is a unit of weight. One carat weighs 200 milligrams, and, generally, the higher the carat amount, the more expensive the diamond will be.

Clarity: Clarity refers to internal flaws in a diamond. The most recognized and commonly used GIA scale ranges from I3 (inclusions visible to the naked eye) to F/IF (completely flawless under 10x magnification).

Color: At a glance, you may think all diamonds look about the same, but diamonds range in color from light yellow to colorless and are graded from a range of W (light yellow) to D (colorless).

Cut: Diamonds are meticulously, thoughtfully and very carefully cut to produce the most sparkle. This attribute, the cut, is graded on a scale of “Poor” to “Ideal.” A cut that is too shallow or deep will make the diamond appear smaller and less sparkly than it actually is.

Step two: Choose your budget

Three engagement rings varying in price.

Deciding on a budget can be helpful to do early in the engagement ring buying process so that you don’t end up choosing one that’s completely out of reach. Most people decide on a price range they’d prefer to stay in and move forward from there. Note that your budget will most likely include the loose diamond you choose in addition to the setting, which leads us to the next step…

Step three: Decide on a setting style

Whether or not you buy the setting beforehand, it’s important to at least have an idea of what you or your partner is looking for, as there may be certain settings that look better with particular diamond shapes. In addition, if you’re looking for a simple setting, you’ll have more room in your budget for the center stone – or less, if you’re looking for a more detailed setting.

Step four: Determine what you value the most

Is size a priority when searching for the perfect diamond? Or would you rather have a beautiful cut, even if it means sacrificing the carat weight? Figuring out which aspects of the 4 Cs you value the most will help you immensely on your diamond-shopping journey. Often, deciding to go for a slightly lower grade in clarity or color can give you more wiggle room when looking for a larger, well-cut diamond.

Step five: Choose a shape

Loose diamonds representing each diamond shape.

Diamonds come in 10 shapes: round, cushion, princess, emerald, marquise, heart, oval, pear, asscher and radiant. They all vary in price and can create unique looking rings. Knowing which shape you or your partner is looking for beforehand can make it easier to look at options when you’re working with a jeweler. If you’re purchasing an engagement ring for your significant other and are not sure what shape she likes, a round brilliant is usually a safe bet – 53% of engagement ring sales consist of a round diamond. To learn more about diamond shapes, study up with this blog post.

Step six: Find a jeweler you can trust

Building an engagement ring is a special experience, and it should be treated as such. This is a rare purchase, one that probably has more sentimental value than financial. Finding a jeweler that will offer a personalized, easy, informative and stress-free experience will help you enjoy the journey, rather than spending any time worrying if you’ve made the right choice. Shane Co.’s non-commission staff of diamond experts will help guide you to the perfect stone, even if you’re not sure where to start.

Step seven: Compare, compare, compare

The easiest way to find out if you’ve found the perfect diamond is to compare them to others. Did you know that even diamonds within the same grade can appear quite different? At Shane Co., we offer a diamond subjectivity kit that allows you to compare diamonds – even those of the same grade – so you know exactly what you’re getting. Here’s a tip: the grade of a diamond is simply a marker of its attributes. The best way to determine how it’s going to look in an engagement ring is to inspect it in person, in natural-looking light.

Step eight: Complete your ring

Four engagement rings with different styles.

Once you’ve decided on a diamond, it’s time to put together your ring! At Shane Co., you can choose a loose stone and engagement ring setting at the same time and our expert jewelers will assemble and size your ring to your specifications. You can even customize further with engravings and unique decorative crowns.

That’s it! If you have any other questions about the diamond buying process, visit us in-store or contact us to speak with one of our jewelry experts. We love providing our customers with the tools they need to make an informed decision that they’re truly satisfied with – because that’s what a friend would do.

The post 8 Mistakes to Avoid When Shopping for an Engagement Ring appeared first on The Loupe.

]]>
Finding the perfect ring to propose with can be simultaneously exciting, fatiguing and a little bit frightening. Luckily, most mistakes are easily avoidable, and your friends in the diamond business are here to help. Read on to find out about missteps you can avoid when shopping for an engagement ring.

Three varieties of engagement rings.

1. Not setting a budget

Listen, we get it – talking about how much it’s going to cost is probably the least romantic part about buying an engagement ring. But figuring out how much you’re willing to spend is vital to finding the right ring. Take into consideration other expenses down the line – are you saving up for a big wedding? A house? Still struggling to pay off student loans? Or, conversely, do you have a nice chunk of change set aside for this once-in-a-lifetime purchase? It’s your jewelers’ job to find something amazing within your budget, not the other way around. P.S. don’t forget about financing and other options available to you when considering the cost of the ring!

2. Doing it all on your own

It’s likely that you’re still hoping your proposal will be a total surprise for your sweetheart. However, trying to tackle buying an engagement ring without the help of those that know your partner well, in addition to someone who’s an expert in all things bridal, is a common mistake that can be easily avoided. You can keep aspects of your engagement a surprise while dropping hints to your future fiancé to figure out what ring she’d like best. If you want to stay tight-lipped, try asking her friends and family what style she would be into. In addition, make sure you’re dealing with an expert jeweler that can help educate you on the ring-buying process – the salespeople at Shane Co. don’t work on commission, so you’ll be in a no-pressure environment and can ask all the questions you’re unsure about.

3. Not doing your research

What’s the first step to making any big decision? Research! In the digital age, there’s a plethora of resources available to you online to learn about diamond shapes, quality, engagement ring setting styles and more. Plus, you and your partner can use tools like our engagement ring style finder quiz and Matchmaker to figure out what style ring she really wants. Walking into a jewelry store without having done any research is like walking into battle without any weapons – you want to be as prepared as you can be.

Three white gold engagement rings.

4. Focusing too much on the paper

It’s important to know the 4 C’s before you begin your diamond buying journey, and asking for a diamond certification is definitely a smart move. But relying solely on how your ring looks “on paper” can be a major misstep. Did you know that diamonds of the same grade can still vary greatly in appearance? That’s why you should always examine your ring in-person before making a decision. A less expensive diamond with a lower clarity grade may even appear similar to a highly graded one, if the inclusions aren’t visible to the naked eye, or can be easily hidden by prongs or other elements of the setting. Ask your jeweler to compare different diamonds to see for yourself what your options are.

5. Trying to stay “trendy”

If you’re paying attention to all the latest trends, you may notice that certain styles receive a lot of attention, then seem to fizzle out after a couple of months. Even if you’re honey is a fashionista, you should probably think twice before opting for “trendy” over “classic.” Everyone’s style is different, but remember that this is one piece of jewelry your significant other isn’t just going to replace when it goes out of style.

Woman holding three engagement rings.

6. Getting carried away in the moment

Shopping for an engagement ring is an emotional experience. It symbolizes the love you share with another person, a sign that represents your lifelong commitment and intent to form a beautiful family of two. That means that it can be easy to find yourself spending way more than you planned to or going for extravagance instead of thinking about what your partner really wants. We’re not saying you shouldn’t get passionate and enjoy the experience – of course you should! But keep your goals and budget in mind while you’re waxing poetic about this big decision.

7. Rushing your purchase

You most likely haven’t rushed your decision to get engaged, so why would you rush your decision to pick the perfect engagement ring? Here’s one of the best tips we can give you: take your time. The perfect proposal will still be waiting for you whether you decide on the first ring you see or take the time to compare a few. The salespeople at Shane Co. are happy to spend their time discussing the attributes of each ring, comparing similar diamonds, showing you different shapes, and educating you on the entire ring-buying process.

Loose diamonds and colored stones.

8. Forgetting about the warranty

It’s easy to get caught up in price comparison when making a big purchase like a diamond. What most people forget, however, is that perks like the warranty and re-sizing can add a significant amount to your total at the end of your shopping journey. Shane Co. offers a completely free lifetime warranty that includes the center stone of your engagement ring. That means that your ring is protected – for free, for life. Most other jewelers charge additional fees for their warranty, which often does not take into account the center diamond.

While some may prioritize size or sparkle, there’s one element of diamonds that we think is completely underappreciated: diamond shape! With so many unique shapes to choose from, Shane Co. lets you express your individuality with the largest variety of traditional and fancy-shaped diamonds, rubies and sapphires.

What is shape?

All 9 shapes of diamonds.

The “shape” of a diamond or other precious stone is the outline of the stone, looking at it from the top down. We typically think of 10 diamond shapes — round, cushion, princess, emerald, asscher, marquise, heart, oval, pear and radiant. Each shape is carefully cut by expert diamond cutters to obtain maximum sparkle and create a specific style. Let’s take a closer look at each of our favorite diamond shapes.

Round

Round diamond.

Round diamonds are by far the most popular diamond shape, taking up 75% of the market for all diamonds sold. They look great with any style of engagement ring setting and are considered the go-to for maximum sparkle. The mechanics of the round shape allow for the perfect reflection of light, if cut with the right quality standards. They are also the only non-fancy “traditional” shape.

Cushion

Cushion cut diamond.

Cushion cut stones get their name from their resemblance to pillows — square with rounded corners. They tend to have an “antique” feel to them and look particularly appealing when paired with vintage-style settings. For the first century it was around, cushion cut diamonds were actually the most popular diamond shape, surpassing round cuts until the early 20th century.

Princess

Princess cut diamond.

Princess cut diamonds were created in 1980 and are now the most popular fancy cut, particularly for engagement rings. With a square, sometimes slightly rectangular shape, they do a beautiful job of reflecting light and creating sparkle. Like round cut diamonds, they tend to blend well with almost all engagement ring setting styles.

Emerald

Emerald cut diamond.

Emerald cut stones are rectangular-shaped, with unique facets that produce a “hall of mirrors” effect, as opposed to the traditional sparkle of a round or similar cut. This emphasizes the dark and light areas, offering drama and elegance to this unique shape. If you’re looking to elongate the hand, emerald diamond shapes are the way to go — just remember that inclusions are often easier to see in an emerald cut, so you may need a higher clarity level for that perfect-looking stone.

Marquise

Marquise cut diamond.

The marquise cut is similar to a football shape and was named after the Marquise of Pompadour. Their narrow shape gives off the illusion of length and size, and with the largest crown surface area of any diamond shape, they are great to maximize your budget for size. They can vary in narrowness depending on the cut and look great in many engagement ring settings, including solitaire, three-stone, and pavé.

Heart

Heart cut diamond.

Heart-shaped stones are exactly what they sound like — the well-known symbol of love cut from a diamond. While less popular in traditional engagement rings, they can often be found ornamenting right-hand rings, pendant necklaces and more.

Oval

Oval cut diamond.

Ovals combine the traditional brilliance of a round diamond with a more contemporary, standout cut. They also have an elongated shape, which can sometimes give the illusion of making them appear larger and lengthen the finger of those wearing them. They look particularly beautiful in a solitaire setting, but can easily blend into any setting because of their sophisticated shape.

Pear

Pear cut diamond.

As a combination of a round and marquise shape, pear-shaped diamonds offer the best of both worlds. They provide the finger-slimming effects of the marquise with the superior sparkle of the round cut. If you’re looking for a diamond shape that offers uniqueness and chic style, pear cuts are the way to go. Whether it’s partnered with baguette side stones, a gorgeous halo, or taking center stage in a solitaire setting, pear-shaped stones always make an impact.

Radiant

Radiant cut diamond.

Radiant cut diamonds are a cross between a cushion and princess cut, with a square shape and cropped, angular corners. They provide amazing sparkle and a vibrant stone that offers a little something different. With this simple but not understated shape, solitaire or pavé settings will bring out the particular sparkle of radiant stones.

When you finally have a gorgeous ring to show off on your left hand, the idea of taking it off may seem a little crazy. But remember: your engagement ring is a piece of fine jewelry. Even though it’s built to last, there are still times you may want to remove it to avoid any potential damage. Here’s what the jewelry experts say about when to wear your ring, and when to store it.

Is it okay to sleep with my engagement ring on?

Most jewelers agree: you’re better off removing your ring before hitting the hay. This will prevent your ring from getting caught in your hair, threads, clothing and anything else that might loosen the stone or become stuck in the setting. The pressure of your body against your hand can also cause your band to become misshapen over time. This rule is especially true if your ring has a prong, cathedral, or another setting with small metal pieces that can get easily jammed.

Can I cook while wearing my ring?

This one’s pretty straight forward. Trapped debris from food, especially fat and flour, can easily get stuck in the intricacies of your ring. This will not only dull your jewelry’s shine but can also lead to sustained damage to your stone over time. Kitchen tools and heat are also problematic, so make sure to put your ring somewhere safe before you dig into dinner.

Can I wear it at the gym?

Exercise + ring = disaster. Extreme movement can lead to accidental scratches or dings, not to mention the built-up sweat, salt, dirt and oils that can lead to an extra trip to the jeweler. Twisting and turning can also cause your jewelry to accidentally break free, leading to an even bigger problem: the loss of your gorgeous engagement ring. Play it safe and ditch the ring for any exercise you plan on partaking in.

Is it safe to wear my engagement ring in the water?

Saltwater and chlorine are the enemy to your favorite accessory. There’s potential for salt or sand to scratch the metal and stone. And, your body acts differently under water, making your fingers shrink and allowing your engagement ring to come loose. Avoid putting your diamond in danger by skipping wearing your bling to the pool or beach.

Will my ring get damaged by cleaning products?

The danger of nicking your engagement ring certainly rings true when you’re scrubbing plates or dusting furniture, but the most harmful part of cleaning is the harsh chemicals used. Bleach and other cleaning tools can easily damage every part of your ring, and gloves won’t necessarily prevent it from catching and coming loose. Better to take it off beforehand and be happy knowing you don’t have to worry about possible damage.

Can I wear my ring when I put my makeup on?

Lotions and make-up can cause unflattering build up that will make your ring appear dull. Keep your sparkle strong by removing your engagement ring (and other jewelry) while you perfect your skincare routine.

Here are more tips for keeping your engagement ring safe and sound:

 • Invest in a ring box or two. Having a pretty container to keep your ring safe while you’re at home and on the go makes all the difference. It’s much easier to lose track of your ring if you’re constantly storing it in different places.
 • Get regular check-ups. It’s important to take proper care of your ring – this includes going in for regular cleanings and checks. An experienced jeweler will not only give your ring a deep cleaning but will also check for any scratches or other issues that they may be able to fix before it gets any worse.
 • When in doubt, take it off. If you’re not sure whether it’s safe to wear your ring, it’s better to remove it than risk any impending harm.

At Shane Co., your engagement ring is made to last as long as your love. With superior handcraftsmanship, high-quality metals and more gold in every ring, you can feel good knowing your engagement ring is safe and sound on your ring finger. Even though diamonds are one of the hardest substances on earth, it’s important to remember that they’re not entirely unbreakable. Enjoy wearing your ring whenever and wherever you can, while still taking precautions to avoid any easily preventable damage. But how can you make the most out of our customization options? Let’s take an in-depth look at building your dream ring.

Engraving

If you’re looking to make your engagement ring even more meaningful, getting a unique engraving is definitely the way to go. We offer a flat $50 fee for engraving, no matter the message, in a variety of fonts. This way, you can choose a look that’s special to you and your partner, and a message that will last as long as your love. Here are some ideas for engraving your engagement ring:

 • Your names or initials
 • The date you met
 • The date of your wedding
 • Your favorite song lyrics
 • A meaningful Bible verse
 • The coordinates of where you met
 • “I thee wed”
 • “I love you”
 • “My heart is yours”
 • “Always and forever”
 • “To have and to hold”
 • “To infinity and beyond”
 • “I do”
 • “Happily ever after”
 • Split messages

Decorative crowns

Picking a halo head for your engagement ring.

Halo decorative crowns: A halo engagement ring contains a ring (or two, or three) of pavé-set diamonds that encircle your center stone. Besides being a unique and contemporary style, decorative crowns can also have the effect of creating a bigger-looking stone. We offer halo decorative crowns in different metals to either match your ring or introduce a chic splash of color.

Other decorative crowns: We also offer unique fashionable mountings that add a personalized touch to your center stone. Choose from options like this Diamond Decorative Crown to add vintage-style detailing to 1-carat stones, or this Diamond Alexa Head for an extra layer of sparkle on a gorgeous ring.

Baguette diamond engagement ring.

If you’ve been paying attention to all the latest fashion trends, you’ve probably seen baguette stones pop up on a pretty regular basis. In engagement rings, they complement an emerald cut center stone beautifully. With a clean and modern look, these stones make an impact whether they’re set east-west or north-south. Because of their unique facets, the quality of baguette stones must be higher in order to create a cohesive style, giving baguette bands an incredibly sparkly and elegant appearance.

The history of baguettes

The baguette stone gained popularity during the early 1900s throughout the Art Deco period, largely because of its geometric, symmetrical shape, which was extremely fashionable at the time. In this era, fine jewelry largely disobeyed conventional norms, instead leaning toward diamond shapes and metals that weren’t just the more traditional round diamond set in platinum that was popular years earlier.

Two of the most famous baguette rings in history were worn by style icons Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe in the early 1950s. Not only did they break the convention of a traditional engagement ring, but their baguette rings began to shape a new culture of unique, personalized wedding jewelry.

Emerald + baguette = a match made in heaven

Since the introduction of these uniquely shaped stones, they tend to be seen alongside each other because of their similar appearances. From a distance, one can even mistake an emerald cut for a baguette — the main difference is that while emerald cut diamonds feature polished corners, baguettes feature more angular ones. Emerald diamonds also tend to come in larger sizes than baguettes.

These diamonds are popular with celebrities because of their exquisite shape, but they are also known for the way in which they show flaws — both in clarity and color. Because of their stepped faceting, emerald cut diamonds show inclusions and yellow coloring to the naked eye much more clearly than other cuts. In order to have a great-quality emerald cut diamond, it needs to be nearly flawless, meaning graded between a VVS1/2 and F-D, thus making it more expensive for a larger carat size.

Today’s glamour

Woman wearing stacked baguette wedding bands.

The steadily maintained trend of classic, dainty engagement rings can absolutely be attributed to the rise in popularity of baguette wedding bands. They pair especially well with stones that are similarly faceted, such as asscher, radiant and emerald cut diamonds. Because alternative diamond shapes have been steadily rising in popularity, this style is especially relevant for a vintage-style look that fits into all the latest trends.

How are brides wearing their bands?

Rather than choosing an engagement ring that speaks to their personal style, on-trend brides have begun choosing simpler engagement rings and showing off with a unique wedding band. Historically, baguette bands were only shown in white gold, but with rose gold and yellow gold growing in popularity, customers are loving the new modern appeal of these combinations. Brides are wearing their baguette bands both as a single wedding band and styled with vintage and classic pavé bands in a stylish stack.

The post Engagement Ring Myths Debunked appeared first on The Loupe.

Hand Holding Three Diamond Engagement Rings

Myth #1: The three months’ salary rule

You’ve probably heard of the old adage that an engagement ring should cost the equivalent of three months’ salary. But how much should you spend on an engagement ring? The answer is more variable than you might think. A poll of 1,640 adults confirmed that the “three months rule” may be going out of style.

While the numbers vary, it’s estimated that the average spend for an engagement ring is between $5,000 and $7,000. The most important thing to remember when deciding how much to spend on an engagement ring is that this decision is entirely personal: Take into account your budget, the type of ring and stone your loved one wants, and the emotional significance of the purchase.

Myth #2: The bigger, the better

Maybe you’ve been dreaming of the giant rocks you see on the hands of celebrities, or maybe you’ve just bought into the idea that a bigger diamond is always better. Either way, this myth is simply untrue. A bigger diamond doesn’t necessarily mean it will look prettier on her hand, nor does it mean that the diamond will have all of the sparkle you’re looking for. You may find that, when looking at diamonds, a smaller one is much more brilliant than a duller, larger stone. The appearance of your diamond is much more dependent on cut, color and clarity than on carat weight, so you can stop worrying that you’re not going big enough.

Myth #3: Engagement ring shopping is a solo act

Woman With Hand On Fiance's Shoulder and Engagement Ring On Her Finger

Engagement ring shopping can be complicated and even stressful, especially if you’re unsure of what your partner wants. So why make it harder on yourself? There shouldn’t be any stigma behind shopping with your significant other; instead, think about the benefits. To start, she’s the one who’s going to be wearing the ring. As well as you may know your future fiancée, we can pretty much guarantee that they know themselves better.

Remember: This and your wedding bands are probably the one purchase you’ll make that will truly last forever. For those of you worried about ruining the surprise, keep in mind that this is something she’s been thinking about for a long time — we can all but promise she’ll be glad you included her in the decision. You can also choose to window shop and save the final unveiling of the ring for the real proposal. Either way, you’ll feel much more confident knowing that she already loves her ring.

Myth #4: Yellow gold is outdated

Yellow gold is sometimes perceived as old-fashioned, but this classic metal is making a big comeback. With vintage engagement rings becoming more and more popular, yellow gold is no longer just appearing on your grandma’s ring. In fact, Meghan Markle and Emily Ratajkowski both recently sported yellow gold engagement rings that were the hit of the fashion world. Luckily, Shane Co. carries a huge variety of stunning yellow gold engagement ring settings as well as unique rose gold engagement rings that you can easily personalize with the center stone of your choice.

Myth #5: Engagement ring = diamonds

Three Diamond Engagement Rings in Yellow Gold

One of the biggest myths you may believe about engagement rings is that they must have a diamond as the center stone. This one makes sense — after all, diamonds are forever, right? While it’s true that diamond engagement rings are the most traditional route (74 percent of all engagement rings in 2018 highlighted a diamond), that doesn’t mean it’s your only option. Actually, it seems like alternative engagement rings are becoming more popular than ever, with celebrities like Halle Berry and Jessica Simpson jumping in on the trend with their gorgeous emerald and ruby rings. Shane Co. carries popular ruby engagement rings, pink sapphire engagement rings and more to complement your tastes.

Myth #6: Custom designing is expensive and difficult

An engagement ring is much more than just a piece of jewelry, it’s a symbol of commitment between two people who love each other. And if your love is unique, why shouldn’t your ring be, too? That’s the thought process of many hopeful couples beginning their search for a custom engagement ring. However, you may have been dissuaded from customizing your ring on the premise that it will cost more and take much longer to make than the thousands of mass-produced designs currently available on the market. This is simply not true.

At Shane Co., we make it easy to customize your engagement ring with the stone and setting of your choice. We carry over 1,000 exclusive Engagement Ring designs, the majority of which require you to pick out a center stone in a shape, color and cut that fits your personal style. We even have engravable designs to better personalize your piece, as well as customizable setting options that are sure to make your ring one of a kind.

Myth #7: Engagement rings are for women only

Close Up of Woman With Rose Gold Engagement Ring

It’s 2019, and the traditional idea of an engagement is ever-changing. According to a survey done a few years ago by the media group responsible for The Knot, XO Group Inc., 5 percent of men were wearing engagement rings, and the trend has only grown since then. With marriages becoming more egalitarian and the idea of gender equality in all areas making its way into the mainstream, there’s no reason why engagement rings shouldn’t follow. Men’s engagement rings can come in a variety of styles. In any case, it’s certainly something to keep in mind as you prepare to begin your journey as an engaged couple.

Myth #8: A diamond can never break

Because diamonds have the highest rating of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, many people incorrectly assume their diamond can’t chip, crack and suffer other surface damage. Unfortunately, it’s still possible for your diamond to break if it is struck with sufficient force and in just the right way, which is why we always stress the importance of picking out a setting that works with your lifestyle. Remember to remove your ring when engaging in sports or other activities that can potentially cause harm to your stone, and make sure to inspect it for any new damage on a regular basis.

On the bright side, Shane Co. offers a Free Lifetime Warranty with all of their engagement rings, including the center stone. So even if your diamond takes a tumble, we’re here to make sure your ring remains as beautiful as the day he proposed.

Myth #9: You must know her ring size first

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to know your loved one’s ring size before you pick out the ring. Most jewelers will be able to resize your ring after the proposal if it’s within about two sizes of her actual size. As long as you have an idea of what fits, you shouldn’t have a problem picking out the ring beforehand. At Shane Co., resizing is even included in your purchase, so you don’t have to worry about any extra fees. If you’re committed to keeping your proposal a surprise, inquiring about her ring size is a dead giveaway. Keep your cool and resize at a later date.

Myth #10: Diamond fluorescence is bad

You may have heard the phrase “diamond fluorescence” being thrown around and believed the rumors that it connotes a less valuable diamond. This is a myth. But let’s get to back to basics: What is diamond fluorescence, and how does it affect the value of your stone? Diamond fluorescence is the glow you may see when the diamond is viewed under ultraviolet light. Some diamonds emit a bluish or (rarely) yellowish light when exposed to UV rays. However, there is no grading factor for fluorescence, despite it being relatively common in gems. About 25 to 35 percent of diamonds exhibit fluorescence — it’s not unusual and it certainly doesn’t lower the grade of your diamond. In fact, some experts believe that blue fluorescence can even enhance a diamond’s appearance, making a yellowish diamond appear more colorless in UV light.

In the end, it’s really more of a personal preference than anything else. If you don’t like the look of a more fluorescent diamond, don’t take it home, and always make sure to carefully inspect the stone you’re considering before buying.

Myth #11: You get a better deal when you don’t buy retail

Woman With Her Hand on Fiance's Shoulder Wearing an Engagement Ring

It may be tempting to think that purchasing a ring through an online auction or wholesaler will save you money, but there’s no hard-and-fast rule when it comes to engagement ring prices. You also have to take into consideration that this is potentially a purchase you will only make once in your lifetime — so figure out what aspects of the ring matter the most to you and make sure you are not just getting a good price, but a good value. Buying from a retailer also offers additional advantages, like working with an experienced jeweler to help you select the right stone and setting, as well as free repairs and other benefits that would otherwise end up costing you more money in the long run.

Shane Co. is dedicated to offering you the highest-quality jewelry, whatever your budget, as well as cleaning, inspection, maintenance, resizing, upgrade and trade-in policies, and more.

Myth #12: Your jeweler is trying to upsell you

Another myth people hold about retail jewelry stores is that your jeweler is always trying to get you to spend beyond your budget. At Shane Co., this is absolutely untrue. Our staff is dedicated to delivering an enjoyable and personalized experience for every customer. Because our staff doesn’t work on commission, you’ll never feel pressured into spending more than you can afford. We also use store lighting that replicates natural daylight so you can see the true color and sparkle of whatever you’re buying, without feeling disappointed in your purchase once you exit the store.

Our goal is to educate you, show you as many options as you want to see, and help you make the best decision. We make the process of buying an engagement ring something to celebrate by removing the stress from the equation. We’ll answer any questions you have and work together with you so you can leave confident in your buying decision and ready for your proposal.

Yellow Gold Floral Diamond Cluster Engagement Ring

Looking for affordable engagement ring options? You’re not alone. A recent survey conducted by TD Ameritrade revealed that younger Americans don’t think engagement rings should cost more than $3,000. At the same time, high-end fashion trends seem to be at an all-time high, popularizing expensive inspiration that may not be giving you the most bang for your buck. Cluster engagement rings may be the style we’ve all been waiting for.

As more millennials are considering taking the next big step (with smaller budgets), we can expect them to be on the search for nontraditional looks that offer a more reasonable price range but still give that classic “wow” factor. Luckily, there are now innovative engagement ring styles available that offer budget-friendly options for a standout ring.

Cluster engagement rings

Cluster engagement rings offer a big-sparkle look without the hefty price tag. Made up of a collection of smaller gems that come together to create the appearance of a bigger diamond, these rings are the perfect alternative to pricey center stones, if you’re open to a more contemporary style.

Trendy and modern

Besides offering a lower price point, cluster engagement rings have been growing in popularity over the years — even some of our favorite celebrities have been seen sporting this distinctive style:

Katy Perry showed off her engagement ring from fiancé Orlando Bloom in February, featuring a unique flower design highlighting a bright red ruby.

In her previous engagement, Scarlett Johansson wore an Art Deco-inspired cluster engagement ring that offered just the right amount of bling.

Christina Applegate combined her wedding and engagement ring for a cluster ring style worthy of an encore (or two).

Exclusive designs

Want to try out this distinctive style for yourself? Here are some of our favorites:

Rose Gold Pear Shaped Cluster Diamond Engagement Ring.

This Pear-Shaped Cluster Diamond Ring comes in our signature shade of 14k rose gold, giving it a unique and feminine look. With 12 round diamonds and a sweet pear-shaped design, this ring is a stunner for only $1,185.

Yellow Gold White Sapphire Cluster Engagement Ring.

If you’re not a fan of diamonds, our White Sapphire Cluster Ring in 14k Yellow Gold is a steal that offers superior sparkle. Twenty-one round white sapphires come together in this gorgeous cluster design paired with a classic yellow gold band. Shop now for only $680.

Triangle shaped blue sapphire and diamond cluster engagement ring.

For an added pop of color, this Traditional Blue Sapphire and Diamond Cluster Ring is elegant and sophisticated. Sixteen round blue sapphires surround 21 brilliant round diamonds for the ultimate bling — and at $577, you don’t have to worry about going over budget.

Floral style white gold diamond cluster engagement ring.

Featuring a unique floral-like design, this diamond ring shines brightly with a diamond-encrusted face and band highlighted by 14k white gold. Not to mention, this showstopper is available for just $2,570.

Rose Gold vintage style cluster engagement ring.

For more rose gold sparkle, this Diamond Floral Ring in 14k Rose Gold has vintage-inspired details complemented by an on-trend design. Fifty-seven round diamonds create gorgeous patterns encircling five larger diamonds, which act as the focal point. You can take this ring home for $1,497.

Other affordable options

If you’re looking for other ways to ensure you and your partner will stay on budget when choosing affordable engagement rings, it can be extremely beneficial to create your own engagement ring by picking out a center stone and setting separately. Doing this allows you to prioritize your budget based on what matters most to you. For example, you may decide to choose a simpler setting, such as a white gold solitaire, so that you have more money to spend on a bigger center stone. Or you may choose to opt for a sapphire or ruby rather than a diamond, which can cut down the price of your ring significantly.

Why shop Shane Co.?

Shane Co. makes it easy to customize your engagement ring in three easy steps: 1. Choose your favorite setting. 2. Choose the perfect center stone. 3. Personalize it with engraving and more! You can even shop by price online or speak with a member of our no-pressure, noncommission staff to figure out how to create your dream ring without breaking your budget. We also offer preset rings in every price range and all our favorite styles.

Because we buy our diamonds directly from the cutters, we are able to get rid of the middlemen and pass the savings on to you. As fourth-generation jewelers, we’ve developed long-standing relationships with our cutters and jewelry vendors, allowing us to get first pick of all newly cut stones. We optimize for quality and offer fair prices that give you the best value in the business.

Man kissing his wife on their anniversary.

If you and your partner are closing in on an anniversary, you may be curious where this tradition came from — and you’re probably wondering what you should get them as a gift. Read on to find out more about this sentimental celebration and see our favorite picks for anniversary gift ideas.

What is an anniversary?

An anniversary is a celebration of a particular date. Usually, within a relationship, couples will celebrate the day of their first date, their wedding, or the day they “officially” became a couple. It’s usually celebrated by exchanging gifts and/or marking the day by going out to eat, going on a trip, throwing a party or another form of recognition. A relationship should be fun, but it’s also a lot of work — anniversaries offer the opportunity to celebrate the life you’ve built together.

Why we give anniversary gifts

The tradition of giving specific types of anniversary gifts by year is believed to date back to central Europe during medieval times. Wives would receive silver wreaths from their husbands for their 25th wedding anniversary, with silver symbolizing harmony between the husband and wife. For a 50th anniversary, wives would receive a wreath of gold. It’s believed that these traditions were practiced mainly by the wealthy, because of the expense of the precious materials used. Today, we still sometimes refer to the 25th and 50th years as the “silver” and “gold” anniversaries.

Where did anniversary gift lists come from?

Wife wearing an anniversary ring, face-to-face with her husband.

Throughout the Victorian era of the 1800s, more anniversary gifts by year were designated, with wood becoming the traditional gift associated with the fifth year of marriage, and diamond being related to the 75th. After Queen Victoria called her 60th year on the throne the “Diamond Jubilee,” the 60th wedding anniversary was also associated with diamonds. The Victorians were extremely fond of categorizing and classifying, so the idea of a list of gifts for each anniversary year quickly became popular.

If you’re confused about which gift matches up to which year, it may come as no surprise — there are a number of well-known anniversary gift lists that have gained traction over time. Emily Post listed eight traditional anniversaries in a 1922 publication, the “Blue Book of Social Usage,” while the American National Retail Jeweler Association also issued a comprehensive list in 1937. Here, the gifts increased in value over time, representing an ever-strengthening relationship. Currently, there are lists associated with flowers, colors, metals, jewelry and more for each anniversary milestone. This offers many options for anniversary gift ideas, but can sometimes be overwhelming if you’re struggling to find the perfect gift.

Anniversary gifts by year

The traditional list of anniversary gifts reads as such:

1st: Paper

5th: Wood

10th: Tin

15th: Crystal

20th: China

25th: Silver

30th: Pearl

35th: Jade

40th: Ruby

45th: Sapphire

50th: Gold

55th: Emerald

60th: Diamond

70th: Platinum

75th: Diamond and gold

Of course, there’s no rule that says you must stick to this list — it’s much more important that you get your significant other something they’ll really enjoy! The traditional list of gifts is a guideline that offers some inspiration if you’re stuck trying to come up with the perfect anniversary gift.

What about anniversary rings?

Selection of diamond and sapphire anniversary rings.

The tradition of giving an anniversary ring to mark milestone wedding anniversaries has grown in popularity in recent years. But what exactly is an anniversary ring, and how does one wear it with their existing bands?

An anniversary ring is a band given to celebrate your years as a married couple. It usually mimics the look of a wedding band or engagement ring, while probably not being quite as extravagant as your original pieces. While there’s no “right way” to wear an anniversary ring, there are a few popular ways that these gifts are styled.

Switch it out

One choice is to replace your wedding ring with an anniversary band, or otherwise switch them off depending on the day. If you have a particularly plain band, it may be fun to switch it out for something with a little more sparkle or a vintage-inspired feel.

Stackable styles

Another option is to wear it along with your engagement ring and wedding band. You can create the look of “stackable” rings by getting something that matches nicely with your current rings, or, if you choose to only wear your engagement ring on special occasions, you can pick out an anniversary ring to match your traditional band for everyday wear.

A whole new look

You can also choose to wear the anniversary ring on another hand entirely — this allows it to shine on its own and means you don’t have to worry about it clashing with your current style. Unlike a wedding or engagement ring, there’s no “traditional” hand or finger you may feel pressured to wear it on.

Diamond Shape Line Up

One of the biggest reasons diamonds remain the most popular choice for engagement rings and other jewelry is simple: their stunning sparkle and shine. While all gems tend to glint and reflect light, giving off a unique glow, the sparkle of diamonds is unlike that of any other gem. The way your diamond looks in the light may be the largest deciding factor when picking out a stone. But why exactly does this effect occur, and what can you do to ensure you get maximum sparkle for your budget? Read on to find out how to pick the perfect diamond.

What makes a diamond sparkle?

Before we get into the details, let’s go over a few important keywords to remember when discussing diamonds:

Scintillation

Scintillation refers to the sparkle a diamond gives off when viewed in motion.

Fire

Fire is the colorful light reflection you see when a diamond is exposed to light. It usually shows up in a “prism” of rainbow colors.

Brilliance

Brilliance refers to the white light that is reflected through the crown of the diamond.

Polish

Polish relates to the smoothness of each facet of a diamond. The higher a stone’s polish is graded, the more sparkle it tends to have.

Cut

The cut of a diamond has to do with the proportions of the stone. Whether or not a diamond is cut too shallow or deep affects the sparkle of the gem.

Now that we’re all caught up, let’s talk about the process that creates sparkle in your favorite stone. When light enters a diamond, it travels through it, reflecting off of its interior surfaces, then exits the diamond. As the diamond or the person looking at the diamond moves, scintillation occurs, and these alternating flashes of white and rainbow-colored light, as well as the contrast of dark and light that moves around the diamond, cause the sparkle we know and love.

Try it for yourself! See how a diamond changes depending on how far or close you hold it from your gaze, as well as how it looks in alternate lighting.

Loose Round Diamond Close Up

How to choose a stone that sparkles

Now that you know what makes a diamond sparkle, how do you go about choosing a stone that prioritizes this diamond quality? Well, there are actually a few steps you can take to make sure you get a diamond that sparkles beautifully.

Examine the diamond under four different lighting sources.

In order to truly evaluate your diamond’s sparkle, you need to see how it reacts under various light sources. First, use spot lighting — a lot of individual light sources — which you may find in a jewelry store. Make sure there is not an overload of spot lights. Too-bright lighting can create a glare that makes all diamonds appear the same. Then, observe the stone in diffused lighting, such as fluorescent lights that bounce off a white ceiling. You should then take a look at the diamond under mixed lighting, such as a combination of spot and diffused. Finally, and most importantly, observe the diamond in natural daylight to see how it will appear in the outside world. By the way, the lighting in Shane Co. stores is engineered to replicate natural daylight. Many other jewelers use high-intensity lights that exaggerate their diamonds’ sparkle and distort their true color.

Pay attention to the cutting style.

The diamond cut has the biggest influence on its sparkle. Choosing a diamond with a high cut grade is of upmost importance if you are prioritizing its light-reflective qualities. The more facets a diamond has, the more reflective surfaces there are to scatter light. All diamond shapes can be sparkly if cut properly, but some are known for their particular abilities to create sparkle and shine.

Keep in mind your diamond’s clarity.

Clarity may affect a diamond’s sparkle depending on the type of imperfections (known as inclusions) and where they are located inside the diamond. If the inclusions in the diamond are cloudy in nature, they may give the diamond an appearance of looking hazy or milky. This would make its sparkle more muted.

Pick the right setting.

Some engagement ring settings cover more of a center diamond than others, which can diminish the sparkle. Choosing a prong setting can better allow light to enter through the diamond than, for example, a bezel setting, which covers a larger surface area of the gem.

Bigger does not equal better.

Heads up: If you’re thinking of choosing a larger diamond because you believe it will produce more sparkle, you could be making a mistake. Cut and clarity matter much more than size. Prioritizing cut will help ensure you pick a diamond with lots of sparkle and shine of the stone.

Keep it clean.

The truth is, dirty diamonds don’t sparkle! Even a well-cut stone can’t shine if it’s obscured by dirt and debris. Keeping your diamond ring clean will ensure that it’s always dazzling.

Three Platinum Diamond Engagement Rings

How to clean diamonds

Making use of this last suggestion is easier than you think. Follow these steps on how to clean your diamond ring and you won’t be able to stop smiling at your sparkly stone.

 1. Soak your diamond in an ammonia-based household cleaner overnight once a week.
 2. The next morning, remove the gem and brush with a soft, clean toothbrush, getting rid of any dirt caught in the setting or around the facets. Don’t forget the back of the stone!
 3. Make sure your ring is secure by getting regular inspections by a qualified jeweler, to avoid the center stone falling out and potentially getting lost.
 4. Avoid cleaning your diamond in or near a sink or use a drain cover to ensure your beautiful, clean diamond ring doesn’t end up in the sewer system.
 5. Avoid harmful solutions like chlorine and toothpaste, and stick to ammonia-based cleaners. If you’re unsure if something may harm your diamond, refer again to your jeweler’s expertise.

What are the sparkliest diamond shapes?

We’ve talked a lot about how getting the best diamond cut can have a huge effect on a diamond’s beauty. But which shape in particular produces the most sparkle? This is an interesting question because in the end, which stone you choose is truly a matter of personal preference. You may like a particular shape because it elongates your fingers, fits a setting you love or matches your personal style. All of this should be taken into consideration when choosing your diamond.

However, if your top priority is sparkle, the popular brilliant round diamond is the way to go. This shape maximizes sparkle like no other. It is the most optically efficient shape with the fewest areas of light loss. In the end, however, the best way to determine how much sparkle your diamond contains is to head to a reputable jeweler and look at a variety of stones under varying light sources. As long as you’re looking at high-quality diamonds, any shape you choose will offer a stunning display of sparkle.

Loose Diamonds and Colored Gems Next To a Sketch of a Ring

Getting your dream engagement ring can seem daunting, especially when you can’t seem to find a design you truly love. While many people believe customizing their engagement ring will be expensive and time-consuming, the truth is that it can actually end up helping you stick to your budget, not to mention leaving you with a ring you’re wild about. Of course, you can also shop our most popular premounted rings or take our ring finder quiz if you’re feeling overwhelmed by options. Find out the advantages of building your dream ring at Shane Co. and decide for yourself how unique you want your engagement ring to be.

Buying loose vs. prebuilt rings

Shane Co. specializes in letting you build a customized engagement ring. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the thought of having to put together a ring or are simply looking for beautiful designs that are ready to propose with, our rings already preset with center stones are the perfect option for you. Created by our world-class design team and crafted with exceptional care, our preset rings are made with high-quality metals and feature hand-picked stones in the most popular sizes and shapes. However, if you prefer to build your dream ring using our customization options, the possibilities are endless. Here are some of our favorite benefits to buying loose:

Made just for you

If you have the option to choose your setting, stone, metal type, prong setting options and more, you are actually collaborating with your jeweler in a shared vision. Knowing that your ring reflects your own personal preferences makes it all the more meaningful.

Rose Gold, Yellow Gold and White Gold Engagement Rings Next To Sketches of Rings

Quality you can see

By choosing your stone and setting separately, you are able to judge the quality of each component much more accurately. For example, a stone already set in a ring may have imperfections hidden by prongs you might otherwise notice if you’d been looking at it loose. When you have the ability to choose from a variety of settings and hand-picked stones, you can prioritize quality and find something you can feel good about.

Tailored to your budget

When you design your own engagement ring, you’re not only skipping out on brand-name markups, but you can actually pick where you want to put your money. If you’d rather have a bigger, higher-graded stone, you can concentrate on that while choosing a less expensive setting, or vice versa. If you’re in love with a particular setting, you can shop many stone options within your budget to find the perfect one. This makes it easy to personalize without breaking the bank.

Skip the mass production

This is one purchase that you want to be unique. It’s one of the only things you’ll wear on a regular basis, and it should feel special every time you put it on. Mass-produced, prebuilt designs that you find at other jewelers can be trendy, but do they really show off your love story like a personalized ring?

Build an emotional connection

Because you have a part in the design process, you’ll probably end up feeling more connected to your ring if it’s customized for you. If you choose to, you can talk to your jeweler to find out exactly who is putting together your ring, making this experience as personal as can be. You also have the opportunity to engrave your ring, which can help make it even more sentimental.

Get what you really want

Whether your loved one is picking out your ring for you or you’re doing the shopping together, choosing a separate setting and stone gives you the opportunity to highlight the aspects of the engagement ring you love the most. With a prebuilt ring, you may appreciate the overall look but not love certain details and end up with a ring you’re not 100% happy with. With customized rings, we can guarantee you’ll be happy with your ring forever.

How does Shane Co. let you customize engagement rings?

Diamond Rose Gold Engagement Ring With Unfinished Sketch of The Ring Next To It

With the advantages of building a personalized ring made clear, let’s talk about how you can create the ring of your dreams at Shane Co.

Start by picking a setting OR a loose stone

Choose from the largest selection of exclusive ring designs, from classic to vintage-inspired to modern. You can shop by price or style, or find settings that fit certain stone shapes. Whether you want to show off a sparkling diamond or something a little more nontraditional, our rubies, sapphires and diamonds come in a variety of shapes and sizes for you to choose from. We offer settings in high-quality 14k yellow, white or rose gold and platinum, so you can find the one that’s right for you.

Look through head/prong options

Did you know that virtually all Shane Co. engagement rings give you the option to change the prong setting to a different style? The prong setting (also sometimes called the head) is the part that holds the center stone. We offer a variety of prong setting designs to choose from to let you further personalize your ring. You can also choose how your stone sits in your ring. If there’s a ring you truly love but you’d rather have four prongs than six, no problem. Our Shane Co. jewelers can personalize the head of your engagement ring to fit your needs.

Add an engraving

After you’ve finished putting together your dream ring, you can add an engraving for an extra touch of customization. This is the perfect opportunity for your significant other to slip in a personal message, date, name or another engraving to make this ring truly yours.

Show off your new engagement ring

At Shane Co., we create jewelry that’s built to last a lifetime. The final step in our ring building process is always making sure you really love your ring. Let us know by snapping a picture and posting it on Pinterest, Instagram or Facebook, leaving a review on our website, or sharing your Shane Co. experience with friends and family. If you’re not totally happy with your purchase, we offer a 60-Day Money-Back Guarantee. You never have to worry about your ring losing its shine because of our Free Lifetime Warranty, which includes unlimited cleaning and polishing and any maintenance it may ever need.

You have your ring – what’s next?

After you’ve fallen in love with your engagement ring, you can get ready for the wedding by shopping our wide selection of women’s and men’s wedding bands. Whether you’re looking for a band that matches your ring or creates a striking contrast, we offer handcrafted designs for every style and budget. Virtually all of our wedding rings can also be personalized with an engraving. Feel confident in your choice when you shop Shane Co., your friend in the jewelry business®.

In the past few years, some people have considered choosing a lab-created stone instead of a traditional natural diamond. But did you know that there are other natural alternatives to lab-created diamonds that offer similar beauty with a lower price and higher value? White sapphires are a perfect lower-cost option.

What are lab-created diamonds?

Lab-created diamonds, also known as synthetic diamonds, man-made diamonds, lab-grown diamonds and many other names, are artificially created stones. They are sometimes confused with cubic zirconia, another diamond alternative. Cubic Zirconia is quite different in makeup, as it is a crystalline form of another element, zirconium dioxide. Cubic zirconia does not contain the same brilliance, fire, or durability as a natural diamond. Lab-created diamonds are generally sold at a lower price than natural diamonds. However, they still remain at a higher price point than other diamond alternatives.

Sapphires: the natural alternative

Colored and White Sapphires in Various Shapes

If you’re looking for an affordable alternative to lab-grown diamonds, white sapphires are a great option. Like diamonds, sapphires are created over millions of years beneath the earth’s surface. Sapphires receive their color from trace elements present within the earth during the formation of the stone. White sapphires are particularly rare because they have no trace elements and therefore appear very similar in color to diamonds. Pink, blue, green and other colored sapphires are a beautiful and unique option for those wanting to make their engagement ring especially distinctive. Here are some reasons why we love white sapphires for engagement rings.

They cost less than natural and lab-created diamonds.

Not only are sapphires in general more affordable than diamonds, white sapphires tend to come at a lower price than some other colors of sapphires. Though they are rarer in nature, there is a higher demand for blue sapphires, so the market follows as such.

They are very durable.

While diamonds remain the most durable stone, with a rating of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, sapphires are a close second, coming in at a 9. Sapphires are a great option for engagement rings, and of course they are protected under the Shane Co. Free Lifetime Warranty.

They are versatile.

White sapphires come in a variety of shapes and sizes, just like diamonds. You can have a round white sapphire engagement ring that mimics a diamond ring style, or choose something in a different shape to fit your style.

They can appear “whiter” than diamonds.

Whereas diamonds appear colorless, white sapphires can be appreciated for their stark white color. Since white stones are hard to come by, this makes for an intriguing and sophisticated engagement ring.

If you decide that a white sapphire engagement ring is right for you, you’ll probably have the opportunity to spend more on the perfect setting because of the money you’ve saved on the center stone. You can design your own engagement ring at Shane Co. by choosing your favorite setting and then picking a sapphire in your preferred cut.

Why is a natural diamond a better choice than a lab-created diamond?

Three Natural Diamonds in Different Shapes

If you decide that you really desire the sparkle of a real diamond, there are a variety of reasons why buying a natural diamond is a better choice than a lab-created stone.

Value

Historically, natural diamond and sapphire prices tend to hold their value, which means if you’re buying a natural stone and intend to one day sell it, you’ll likely get back most, or possibly more, of the investment you put into it. Man-made diamonds, on the other hand, have no resale value whatsoever. If you try to sell your lab-created diamond later on, it may not be accepted by jewelers and will end up going for pennies on the dollar in online marketplaces.

Sentimentality

Natural diamonds are formed over millions of years below the earth’s surface. Plus, the supply of natural diamonds is finite. Synthetic diamonds are manufactured in a lab in a matter of weeks. It only makes sense to choose a rare and natural stone, such as a diamond or sapphire, to symbolize the rare and enduring nature of love and commitment. In addition, because lab-grown diamonds have only been around for a short amount of time, it’s impossible for them to embody the emotion and tradition of natural diamonds that have been passed down from one generation to the next.

Ethics

One of the reasons some people may consider a synthetic diamond is because they’re unfamiliar with ethical practices in the diamond mining industry. The fact is that the industry has programs in place, such as the Kimberley Process and the System of Warranties Guidelines, to help prevent “conflict diamonds” from entering the supply chain. Shane Co. adheres to the highest standards of ethics and practices and only works with partners who value the importance of ethically sourced stones as much as we do.

Making the ethical choice

A Collection Of Rough Diamonds

In 2003, after much attention was drawn to “conflict diamonds,” the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was established to help prevent these diamonds from entering the mainstream market. It requires buyers and sellers of diamonds to verify that their stones are being purchased from legitimate sources that do not fund conflict, and prevent those in the business from buying or selling diamonds to companies with unknown or suspect suppliers. This process has reduced the amount of “conflict diamonds” being sold all around the world.

How does Shane Co. fit in?

Shane Co. takes ethical sourcing seriously, even beyond the requirements of the Kimberley Process. The Shane family has bought from the same families of stone cutters for generations — it’s one of the reasons why we’re offered first pick of all newly cut stones. Tom Shane personally travels to Bangkok, the colored gemstone capital of the world, to hand-pick our rubies and sapphires, and makes it a point to intimately know the reputation of the sources we deal with. “There’s a right way and a wrong way to do business,” he says, and he believes that as a leader in the diamond industry it’s our responsibility to take control at a local level to prevent dishonorable practices from occurring. We have always maintained the highest ethical standards, even before the implementation of the Kimberley Process.

When these measures were passed, Tom Shane remarked, “As Shane Co. was doing all the diligence already, and had been for years, we were unimpacted. There was nothing for us to change!” You can feel good knowing that Shane Co. gems are 100% ethically sourced.

Deciding what’s right for you

Ultimately, your choice in fine jewelry, particularly when it comes to engagement rings, has to be something you feel confident about. Whether your goal is finding something affordable, meaningful, beautiful or all of the above, Shane Co. is here to help you make the best informed decision. You can shop all of our loose white sapphires in a variety of shapes and sizes on our website or explore our natural diamonds for the perfect engagement ring. We offer natural stones because we truly value their story and meaning — it’s one of the reasons why our customers keep coming back.

If you’re in the process or even just thinking about purchasing an engagement ring, you probably have a lot of questions. One of the most common of these questions is what exactly is an engagement ring setting, and how does it affect the ring buying process? The jewelry experts at Shane Co. are here to help.

What does it mean to buy only a diamond setting?

There are two ways you can purchase a diamond ring: choose a premounted ring or choose the setting and center stone separately. Premounted refers to what you’re probably imagining when you picture an engagement ring ― a band with a diamond sitting on top, perhaps surrounded by metalwork or other smaller stones. For people who want the ultimate in ring buying simplicity, this may be the ideal option, and Shane Co. has a great selection of premounted rings to choose from.

However, this is not the only way to purchase a ring. By purchasing an engagement ring setting first, then picking out a loose diamond or other stone to display in the center, you can find the right look for her style as well as hand-pick the best diamond for your budget. Shane Co. has a tremendous selection of rings that allow our customers to create custom jewelry that perfectly fits their needs.

Benefits of buying engagement ring settings only

When you buy your engagement ring setting separate from the center stone, you’re able to create a unique engagement ring that’s guaranteed to be different from everyone else’s. Being able to hand-pick a stone for its color, cut, clarity, size and shape allows you to better take into consideration your budget in addition to your style. Plus, certain diamond shapes will look better in particular settings.

Types of settings

Engagement rings are made up of two parts: the shank (body of the ring that goes around the finger) and the head (the metal that holds the center stone in place). There are a variety of different styles of settings, each with their own unique attributes. We encourage you to take a look at some of the options available to you below, as well as talk to a certified jeweler, before making any final decisions.

Round Diamond Prong Setting White Gold

Prong setting

A prong setting is the most common and popular setting for diamond engagement rings. It can accommodate a variety of different diamond cuts and shapes. The prongs act as small claws, grasping the diamond and holding it to the band. This type of setting is typically used to hold a larger center stone, though it can accommodate any number of diamond sizes.

Pros: Prong settings are so popular because they allow the diamond to be raised up and therefore disperse light more easily, allowing for the maximum amount of sparkle. They are also crafted with less metal and in less time, making them one of the more affordable diamond ring settings you can buy. They are generally quite easy to clean, as there is a lot of stone surface area visible and within reach.

Cons: Though these settings are quite secure, they may not feel as safe as other options. It’s also not a great setting to choose if you live a very active lifestyle or have to work with your hands a lot, as the prongs can snag or scratch, potentially putting the raw diamond at risk.

Yellow Gold Halo Setting Engagement Ring With Round Oval Diamond

Halo setting

A halo setting secures the center stone underneath a rim adorned with pavé, invisible-set or channel-set diamonds. This style has become increasingly popular with celebrities because of its contemporary and unique appearance.

Pros: Very secure and will keep your center stone safe and snug, protecting it from knocking or scratching against surfaces. It can also make the center diamond appear larger because it is surrounded by smaller stones.

Cons: If your center diamond has a good color grade and you choose a colorful halo, the surrounding stones can alter the appearance and color of your diamond. In addition, lots of little diamonds means more opportunity for them to come loose and a harder fix for your jeweler.

Round Diamond Channel Setting Engagement Ring

Channel setting

A channel setting is depicted by a row of diamonds side by side, suspended by individual seats cut into each side of the channel. This setting is often used for wedding bands or for the side stones accenting the center diamond of an engagement ring. The uninterrupted stones are said to symbolize the harmonious continuity and commitment of love.

Pros: Channel settings are great for active lifestyles and health professionals because they lock each diamond securely into the band and set them flush against the ring, virtually eliminating the opportunity for snagging or catching. Lots of diamonds also means lots of sparkle!

Cons: Because of the excess metal and labor, channel settings can be more expensive than their counterparts. They are also not recommended for fragile gems and can be difficult to resize later on.

Bezel Setting Round Diamond Engagement Ring

Bezel setting

In a bezel setting, the metal is formed around the shape of the diamond so that the top of the stone sits flush to the perimeter of the setting. You can get a full bezel, which encircles the entire stone, or a partial bezel, which holds two sides of the stone but leaves openings on the other two.

Pros: Perfect for an active lifestyle and health professionals, this ring offers a clean, modern look. It can also easily conceal nicks or chips on the diamond girdle. A white gold bezel setting can make the center diamond appear larger.

Cons: It may be more expensive because of the extra metal and labor, and it can conceal up to 10% of the diamond (though a well-cut diamond’s light enters and exits primarily through the top of the diamond, which will remain uncovered).

Three Stone Diamond Ring With Round Diamonds

Three-stone setting

With a three-stone setting, the center diamond is flanked by two other stones. This is a classic engagement ring style we’re sure you’ve seen before.

Pros: This setting offers the opportunity for more customization. For example, you can choose a ring that has sapphires or rubies as the side stones. When paired properly, the two side stones can add a lot more sparkle and personality.

Cons: Larger diamonds on the sides can make the center stone appear smaller. This setting also requires more cleaning and maintenance than some of the other options.

Round Diamond Cathedral Setting Ring

Cathedral setting

A cathedral setting uses arches of metal to hold the diamond high above the band. It adds height and a vintage feel to the ring.

Pros: Adding height can make the center diamond appear larger. It’s also a very elegant style and allows for more detail near the underside of the diamond, such as filigree metalwork or pavé diamonds. It securely holds and highlights the center stone.

Cons: This setting can look a bit more cluttered than others. It’s also more difficult to clean and may snag on clothes or furniture.

Cushion Cut Diamond With Pave Setting

Pavé and micro-pavé setting

This setting gets its name from the French word for “paved” and uses tiny beads or prongs from surrounding metal to hold tiny diamonds into place. When using the smallest version of these diamonds, it’s called a micro-pavé.

Pros: Pavé settings provide lots of sparkly flair and flash and can be found on all ring styles from contemporary to vintage in style. It’s a smooth surface that can work with active lifestyles.

Cons: It carries the risk of diamonds falling out, particularly because they’re so small. This setting is also not recommended for fragile gems.

How to make your diamond ring look better

Did you know that choosing the right setting can actually make your center stone look bigger and better? Whether you’ve chosen a 1.00-carat diamond ring or something much larger, taking the diamond clarity, cut, color and shape into consideration can vastly improve the stone’s appearance. Here are some tips to make your diamond appear bigger and brighter in your new ring:

 • Fewer prongs = more room to sparkle.
 • White gold bezel settings will surround a colorless diamond and trick the eye into thinking it’s larger than it is.
 • Halo settings use surrounding smaller diamonds to create the appearance of a larger stone.
 • A thin band means your diamond is the center of attention.
 • 3-stone settings with small side stones can complement your diamond’s natural beauty.
 • Yellow gold and rose gold settings can cover up the yellowish tint in a diamond that’s lower on the color scale.
 • Shiny metals reflect light and make your center stone have more sparkle.
 • Try out an alternate center stone shape, like an emerald cut or princess cut diamond, instead of traditional round for a unique look.
 • Keep it clean: A clean diamond is always a stunner.

You can shop all of Shane Co.’s engagement ring settings before picking out a gorgeous center diamond or gemstone to complete your look. We’re proud to offer the highest-quality diamonds in every GIA grade, as well as over a thousand exclusive engagement ring styles. Get the best value for your budget at Shane Co.

The diamond. A timeless symbol of love and the special birthstone of those born in April. It’s safe to say that many are envious of this birthstone, and it’s easy to see why. Its iridescent sparkle and shining reputation are enough to make the other months of the year jealous.

Adapted from the Greek word “adamas,” meaning “invincible,” diamonds are one of the hardest substances in the world and are thought to be unbreakable.

But why is April lucky enough to call this gemstone its own?

Luck may in fact be the reason. No one really knows how certain months became associated with certain gemstones. Over time, gemstones were linked with zodiac signs and in 1912, each stone was officially associated with a specific month of the year.

Diamonds were believed to possess extraordinary healing powers and were even thought to cure illnesses linked to the brain. In ancient Greek history, it’s said that the diamond made a warrior unconquerable.

Naturally, diamond jewelry is the perfect gift for the special person in your life celebrating an April birthday. With its unmatched sparkle and brilliant history, it’s sure to be a gift she’ll love.

These bezel-set diamond earrings in 14k rose gold are stunning and would make the perfect birthday gift. Expect these earrings to become her staple piece and a part of her everyday look.

Perfect for a night out on the town, this gorgeous three-stone diamond ring in 14k yellow gold will make the ultimate statement. Give her a gift that sparkles just as much as she does.

Celebrate her birthday with this sparkling 14k rose gold bezel-set diamond necklace. It’s a piece that will go with every outfit, and she will be reminded of you each time she wears it.

Our diamond jewelry features hand-matched diamonds, ensuring the most sparkle. We uphold the highest standards of business ethics for ourselves, our vendors and our suppliers through the Kimberley Process. This ensures that all of our diamonds are conflict-free diamonds. Diamonds are truly a marvel of nature! Here are 10 facts that show just how special they are.

 1. The word “diamond” comes from the Greek word “adamas,” which means indestructible or invincible. Though diamonds are incredibly strong, the truth is they are not indestructible. If you hit a diamond with a hammer, it’s a guarantee that the hammer will win.
 2. Determining the age of a diamond is tricky and can only be done by carbon-dating the diamond’s inclusions. Today, the generally accepted scientific theory is all diamonds are between one and three billion years old, with the oldest diamonds being about 3.3 billion years old.
 3. Diamonds form between about 90 and 120 miles beneath the earth’s surface and are carried to the surface by volcanic eruptions.
 4. Less than 1% of the total global diamond production comes from the U.S., but Americans buy more than half of the world’s quality diamonds.
 5. A diamond found in nature is called a rough diamond and it will lose approximately 50% of its weight during the cutting and polishing process. The excess diamond fragments are cut into smaller diamonds and used for industrial purposes.
 6. An estimated 80% of diamonds go to industrial uses. The rest are used in jewelry, and only about 2% of those are flawless diamonds.
 7. The largest rough diamond was found in 1905 in South Africa and named “Cullinan.” It weighs in at an impressive 3,106 carats, which is 1.37 pounds.
 8. A rough diamond looks very similar to a piece of glass that has been in the ocean for many years. Most people who find a rough diamond have no idea what it is.
 9. A diamond is the hardest natural mineral, rating a 10 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale. It is four times harder than corundum, the next hardest mineral, which is a 9 out of 10. Corundum is better known as rubies and sapphires.
 10. The more yellow a diamond is, the less rare it is, dropping its color grade and value. However, fancy yellow diamonds or canary yellow diamonds are actually rarer and have a higher price tag than colorless diamonds.

Choosing the shape of the center diamond for your engagement ring is a very personal decision. Shane Co. prides itself on carrying the 10 most popular diamond shapes in the market:

1. Brilliant Round

OctBlogPost_round_660x400

The full cut round diamond is the most popular shape on the market. It maximizes light, creating dazzling sparkle.

2. Princess

OctBlogPost_princess_660x400

Square-shaped with many sparkling facets, the princess cut is a fancier choice and works in almost any ring style.

3. Cushion

OctBlogPost_cushioin_660x400

A marriage between the round and princess cuts, the cushion cut ranges in shape from square to rectangular with rounded corners. It’s gorgeous in vintage-inspired rings.

4. Emerald

OctBlogPost_emerald_660x400

The emerald shape is a rectangle with corner facets and broad, flat planes. It is given a steep cut, creating rows or “steps” of elongated facets.

5. Radiant

OctBlogPost_radient_660x400

The radiant shape is similar to an emerald cut. Radiant cut diamonds have angled corners and can range from square to rectangle.

6. Oval

OctBlogPost_oval_660x400

The oval cut is an elliptical shape based on the brilliant cut. Because it creates the illusion of length, it is a popular style for a woman with a small hand or short fingers.

7. Marquise

OctBlogPost_marquise_660x400

A variation on the brilliant cut, the marquise has an elongated shape with pointed ends. Its shape is flattering for small hands because it makes the finger appear longer.

8. Pear

OctBlogPost_pear_660x400

The teardrop-shaped pear diamond makes a beautiful ring. The cut is a cross between brilliant and marquise, and it is also well-suited to women with petite hands or short fingers.

9. Heart

OctBlogPost_heart_660x400

The heart-shaped diamond is the most romantic of all diamond shapes. It is like a pear shape, but with a cleft at the top.

10. Asscher

OctBlogPost_asscher_660x400

The Asscher shape has a “stepped” square cut with cropped corners. It is a wonderful choice for fashion-forward women who desire a dramatic engagement ring.

Every diamond shape has its own loyal following, and there really is no wrong choice, as long as she loves the way it looks on her finger. At the Shane Co. store in Roseville, California, Diamond Consultant Brian Hendricks says he personally likes the emerald cut the most because, “It is classic and tranquil.” The Roseville store manager, Tanner Brannam, has a different preference in a diamond. He said, “I prefer the radiant cut because it has a very unique sparkle that is different than any other diamond.”

I also asked a Shane Co. customer for his preference when he was upgrading his wife’s center diamond. He chose an Asscher cut diamond, explaining, “I like the Asscher mostly because it’s rare, but it also has a unique look that I like. I looked all over Sacramento and Shane Co. was the only jeweler that had it.”

So what’s my favorite diamond shape, you ask? I have to go with the most popular diamond shape—the brilliant round. I personally like this cut because of the overall symmetry and sparkle. Let us know which one is your favorite in the comments below!

The post Cushion Cut Diamonds appeared first on The Loupe.

]]>
One of the biggest misconceptions about the fancy cushion cut diamond is that it is exclusively a modern cut, when in reality nothing could be further from the truth. The allure of cushion cut diamonds actually dates back several centuries. About 200 years ago, cushion cut diamonds were considered the most popular shape of diamond in the world. The cushion cut was incredibly popular throughout the nineteenth century and, in recent years, it has made a comeback in popularity, ranking third overall behind the brilliant round and the princess cut. If you look to the rich and famous, there has recently been a huge increase in celebrity engagement rings with a large cushion cut diamond, typically surrounded by pave halo settings.

Hundreds of years ago, when cushion cut diamonds first started being cut, they were referred to as “old miner’s cuts,” and the facet cuts were very inconsistent overall. The theory as to why diamonds were originally cut in this shape is that the technology of the time was very primitive and diamonds were hand cut. Only in more recent times has diamond cutting become advanced enough that diamonds can now be cut perfectly round, making brilliant round diamonds more popular. To get an idea of what a cushion cut diamond looks like, we refer to ShaneCo.com which states, “a cushion cut diamond is a marriage between a round and princess cut, ranging from square to rectangular with rounded corners.” This attractive combination of a square cut diamond with rounded corners gives the diamond a “pillow” or “cushion-like” appearance, falling somewhere between a rectangle and an oval diamond. Cushion cuts typically have larger facets to increase their brilliance.

One of the reasons cushion cut diamonds appeal to today’s diamond shoppers is they like the various cut and size options that are available. Cushion cuts can come with varying facet alignments and cut ratios, which offer many possibilities when it comes to appearance. The actual shape of a modern cushion cut diamond can range from an equal length-to-width ratio to a more rectangular shape, with up to a 1.0 to 1.30 length-to-width ratio possibility.

If you are in the market for a cushion cut diamond, it’s important that you understand the Four Cs of diamond grading. However, when selecting your favorite cushion cut diamond (or any diamond), the most important thing is finding a diamond that is visually appealing to you and fits within your budget.

Stop by your local Shane Co. store and let one of the diamond experts educate you on the cushion cut and other diamond shapes.

Diamonds are a timeless treasure. Modern science knows a good deal about how diamonds are formed yet diamond formation is still a bit of a mystery, forcing scientists to make some educated guesses on some aspects of the diamond formation process.

The main reason for uncertainty in the formation process is because diamonds form naturally in the upper mantle of the Earth, approximately 100+/- miles below the surface. There is no technology that allows humans to witness this process so deep in the Earth, so there is some speculation involved.

Diamonds are basically highly organized and highly condensed pure carbon crystals that have bonded together under extremely intense heat (approximately 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit) and pressure (approximately 275,000 pounds per square inch) making it the hardest known mineral. As with crystals that form on the Earth’s surface, the formation of a diamond is not necessarily a continuous process. Scientists believe that diamonds often began to form and some cases a change in the conditions caused the process to stop, and possibly sit dormant for up to millions of years, only to continue the growth process at a later date when the conditions have changed again. Remarkably, most diamonds (arguably all natural diamonds) are dated to be between 1-3 billion years old, but that is not always the case as some diamonds can be older or younger. Actual diamonds cannot be dated, but there are ways scientists can date the inclusions within a diamond.

Diamonds form deep in the Earth’s crust and quickly move to the surface through volcanic rock formations called kimberlite pipes, which is like magma flowing to the surface of the Earth. The process of diamonds coming to the surface happens relatively fast and during the process the diamonds are cooled rather quickly, which plays a role in the overall formation process. Once on the surface of the Earth, a diamond waits to be found by a human being. A diamond that is found in nature, prior to being cut, is called a rough diamond. To the untrained eye, a potentially very valuable rough diamond can very easily be passed up as just a piece of glass.

The rarest and most valuable diamonds are the ones with the fewest internal inclusions and the least amount of color or absence of color (the exception being fancy colored diamonds). Inclusions are the natural minerals and crystallizations that become trapped within a diamond as it is forming in the mantle of the Earth. In terms of only the clarity of a diamond, any trapped inclusions make the diamond less rare, and therefore less valuable than a like-diamond that does not have such inclusions (overall diamond value is driven by carat weight, cut, color and clarity). Inclusions within a diamond are what make no two diamonds exactly alike, however, some difference sare so minuscule that no visible difference can be seen by the unaided eye.

When looking at diamonds to purchase, it is important to keep one thing in mind; like so many things in life, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A diamond that is beautiful to one person may not be to someone else. When buying a diamond for any occasion, be aware of the grading (carat weight, cut, color, and clarity) but it’s not advisable to base your final decision on the numbers and letters of the grading. Find a diamond that’s beautiful to your naked eye and one that also fits within your budget.
